Unblack metal or sorrow metal, is a sub-genre and sort of counter culture of the black metal genre.

Black metal is a metal genre with normally fast guitar, drums, high pitched screams and gives off an atmosphere of darkness. It’s lyrics often focus on blasphemy, satanism, paganism, anti-religion and death (though not all black metal bands sing about this). Through it’s dark and sometimes troubling history something strange happened, it gained a small christian following, who liked the stage presence, the atmosphere, the music, but not the lyrics.  So they made their own version.

Thus, unblack metal was born, with bands like “Antestor” (meaning testify) paving the way for other bands like “Frost like Ashes” and “Crimson Moonlight” to continue the genre.

Unblack metal had the look and sound of black metal with biblical and positive lyrics and messages.  While some looked down on the metal groups, others welcomed them, happy that these groups could enjoy this genre of music in their own way.
