A voice from a seance meets Eurorack and Moog. A sample from "The Pursruck Rappings, Germany, 1971" (via the Okkulte Stimmen collection[1]) is looped on the Radio Music module. Bass tones from the Moog Sub 37. Other sounds from the Intellijel Atlantis (set on a cycling envelope) and from a Mutable Instruments Elements that is sequenced with a Monome White Whale + Grid.

The sample is a voice saying "Ich hab' Angst"—"I am afraid."

Our latest synth jam experiment thing. Fun fact: I have no idea where that sample came from. I need to do a better job of cataloging and labeling things.

Being new to synthesis, when we first got the Moog Sub 37, we were wondering why it didn't offer sine wave as an oscillator option. Eventualy we learned that because sine waves have no harmonics, they're not particularly useful for synthesizing sounds. But we learned how you can use a filter to turn a triangle wave into a sine wave by shaving off the harmonics. We used an iPad oscilloscope app [1] to adjust the filter until we achieve a sine wave. As a bonus, the sounds at the end are sine waves achieved by allowing a Peaks filter to self oscillate, and controlling it with a LS1 touch strip. So, two alternate ways to achieve sine waves without actually having a dedicated sine wave oscillator.

The background ambient sound is a sci-fi TV sample looping on the Radio Music module.

Our latest Disquiet Junto project: 

We loaded the field recording into the Radio Music module [1] and did our best to accentuate the bells using a band pass filter and EQ. Then an SQ-1 sequence of additional bells from a Braids module is added. We weren't entirely sure how to reinforce the melodic content of the bells in the original recording, so the idea here was to use them as a jumping-off point for a little tune.

The latest from rocketsandrayguns and me in synth experiments, for the latest Disquiet Junto project.

We started with an Alan Lomax field recording: “Untitled keen for a dead child”, sung in Irish Gaelic by Kitty Gallagher, recorded in Letterkenny, Co. Donegal, in 1951. This recording was loaded on to the Radio Music module. The irregular looping of the sample was modulated with a Pamela’s Workout and an LFO.

The output from the Radio Music was split up. On one channel, the original field recording was simply patched through a Springray for analog reverb. On a second channel, the audio went through a Ripples band-pass filter to the Disting, which was set to on the Pitch/Envelope Tracker mode. The Disting’s pitch/envelope output was used to control the pitch and color of the Braids VFOF voice synthesizer, and this output was processed with Blue Sky and El Capistan digital reverb and delay.

Added to that: Peaks bass drum, triggered by the Pamela’s Workout. And finally, some synth sounds from the Juno-60.

Funny story: after I posted this, SoundCloud yanked it, because "Our automatic content protection system has detected that your sound 'Ominous Radiophonics' may contain the following copyright content: 'Daydreaming' by Claes Rosen, owned by Universal Music B.V.. As a result, its publication on your profile has been blocked." 

That is to say, their algorithms thought that this bit of cod radiophonics sounded like this.

Of all the Disquiet pieces we've done so far, this is probably the one I've liked the most. If you're my age and watched The Third Eye on Nickelodeon in the 1980s (or if you're older and grew up in Britain in the 1970s, when that stuff was originally broadcast), you may have some idea of what we were aiming for.

We decided to aim for something the Radiophonic Workshop might cook up for the title sequence of an early '70s children's television series. With that in mind, we considered electronically treated acoustic sounds fair game. The drum is a slowed down recording of Karin hitting a record crate.
