Cousin Ann’s Stories for Children, 1849 [36 pgs.]

This children’s book, written by Ann Preston [1813-1872], an abolitionist, women’s rights and temperance advocate, doctor, and educator, contains a number of humorous nursery rhymes and moralistic stories. It seems that Preston held a number of progressive views in regards to animal welfare [Howard and his Squirrel], abolition [Henry Box Brown], and personal health [I’ll Never Use Tobacco]. But my favorite part of the book is the tiny illustration of the squirrel-house, complete with a running wheel! Cousin Ann’s Stories for Children has been completely digitized and all pages will be available soon on HSP’s digital library.
