Headcanon for our muses - meme
(I swear if anyone had been able to hear the ungodly sound that I just made... They might want to euthanize me xD)
Kagami is born with water affinity. Which, not only rare between the Uchiha, was also a bit of a problem for them. Almost every Uchiha was born with really high Fire affinity, giving them the ability to perform highly difficult fire Jutsu and developing them as such.
Yet the curly haired Kagami wasn't such a phenomenon. Before the village was ultimately founded, he had great troubles adjusting, constantly being pushed into using fire which only burned and scarred him. Luckily, he was still very young when peace happened -- and Tobirama put together the first teams for the academy. While Tobirama's distrust towards the Uchiha was still fresh at that moment, he took to Kagami very quickly. In a way, he probably reminded him of himself when he was that age: misunderstood, rather lonely. Just that Kagami was without any family. The young boy of course didn't talk about it, but for Tobirama it wasn't difficult to find out about his parents, the horrible ambush.. the planned murdere right inside the safety of their own homes. A terrible thing to face and yet he saw how Kagami easily made friends: Torifu and Hiruzen where appointment into his team at first. Later, Danzo was put into Hiruzens position. And with each, Kagami took up on friendship quick.
Tobirama was able to see even the Uchiha from a different angle here, a tame one, a warm one. He could watch how this one tiny Uchiha was filled with so much compassion, that he could offer it to the whole village and still not run out. Even towards Tobirama. His voice was always level, respectful and polite. Kagami had no hesitations to look up at his Sensei and yet, with a guilty feeling in his heart, Tobirama always looked past him, at his forehead, at his nose or chin... But never the eyes. It was ingrained from the years of war against a clan with such a powerful bloodline. The sharingan, one of the truly powerful tools, terrifying within its own rights as it could warp the mind until nothing was left of it. But Kagami was unrelenting, growing more softer and more warmer towards Tobirama the more they trained.
Of course, he had picked up on the strong water affinity. Tobirama didn't play favourites, but he knew he needed to help him navigate the world of water. To have the young Uchiha feeling capable, seen, useful. So he often took him aside for extra training. It often was meditation by a water body, training to attune his chakra to the fluidity, the shapeless element that could fit any crack and make even stones explode from within. Kagami took to his Sensei's teaching's quickly and showed great potential.
A potential that developed so rapidly, that Tobirama decided for Kagami to be the first Shinobi trained into the newly formed ANBU. The scrawny, almost lifeless boy grew into a warrior, one that filled Tobirama with personal pride. He had a liking towards him, akin to what a father probably feels. And Kagami? Kagami would give his life for the man who showed him light in a dark world.
(this is a student/Sensei with a Fatherly aspect version of it. I do also have romantic headcanons, that I would share if you like to hear it!)
