Sopor Aeternus & The Ensemble Of Shadows

Aeternus & The Ensemble of Shadows (or simply Sopor Aeternus) is a German neoclassical dark wave band. Their sound draws influences from dark medieval music and German electro-gothic from the 1980s, as well as a strong instrumental appeal.
The vocalist's closed stance, choosing to remain anonymous, her refusal to perform live, and the scarcity of information made it virtually impossible to separate the truth from mere speculation as to her origins. Anna-Varney Cantodea is known to have frequented the Negativ nightclub in Frankfurt for some time, where she met two people who were attracted by her reviews of a band that was performing.
The conversations that pointed to the need for renewal in the music scene were what generated an initial outline of what would become Sopor Aeternus.
1995 that marked the band's history. Featured on the worldwide distributed "vampire" compilation "What Sweet Music They Make", with the song "The Feast Of Blood", the work became recognized worldwide.
In the same year, Varney participated in the compilation "Jekura - Deep the Eternal Forest" with four tracks: two songs from "White Onyx Elephant", an instrumental project parallel to Sopor Aeternus and two Black Sabbath covers, "A National Acrobat" and "Paranoid ", published with their names inverted and accented in a strange way. Also in 1995, the albums "Todeswunsch – Sous le soleil de Saturne" and the limited EP "Ehjeh Ascher Ehjeh" were released. This is how the band's career began, intensifying their work from 1997 onwards, and they are currently on their 16th album, in addition to reissues and participation in compilations.
