tw; gun violence, mass casualty, school shooting
hereās what iām observing surrounding the topic of gun violence and charlie kirk. for reference, i live in a red state, in a red city. i am a christian but i am very far left. i support gun control, i support trans rights, i support a womanās right to choose. the church i go to doesnāt position itself in politics, it separates politics from the bible, so about 98% of the time, sermons and bible studies are free of any political rhetoric. the group i go to is kind of a catch all, so people not attending a study, go to this group. this is all vital information as we broach this subject.
two weeks ago after the shooting at the catholic school in minneapolis, i went to my wednesday night bible study. i had known that there was a school shooting but i didnāt know all the details, i had no idea that there were casualties, i did not know that the shooter was a transgender woman who had previously attended that school. the conversation that was had surrounding that tragic event was disgusting. an older man was referring to the assailant as a ātransgender whackoā who was addled in the brain from hormone therapy and took it out on the āfine men and womenā that educated them as a student.
today, there was a shooting in colorado, injuring three more children. also, charlie kirk is unfortunately shot and killed. which one do people (republicans) care more about? charlie kirk. they are actively turning him into a martyr, someone who died for his just republican beliefs, and will likely use him as a pawn to further the far right agenda charlie kirk campaigned for. the conversations at church tonight surrounded what a shame it was that he was shot, and how saddened they were, and they hope the person who shot them is arrested and sentenced. not one word was said about the colorado shooting.
this is a real time example of republicans and the right cherry picking instances of gun violence to be upset about. this is them twisting the rhetoric of these instances to serve their own political interests. the minneapolis shooting is a republicans excuse for taking away trans rights and healthcare, the charlie kirk shooting to villainize the left. meanwhile, the only rhetoric that we should get from this situation is that today, senseless acts of violence injured people, took someoneās life, and was entirely preventable.
the reason that people arenāt displaying empathy toward this situation is because charlie kirk was a man who said that it was worth it to have gun deaths in order to protect the second amendment. while i donāt agree with him politically and i donāt think that he shouldāve died in such a violent manner, im not going to sit here and cry over his death. children were shot in their school today because of republican gun policies. children died 2 weeks ago in their school because of republican gun policies.
i donāt believe that a man who said that deaths are necessary deserve empathy. i do feel for his children who will grow up to see videos of their father being killed. i feel for the crowd that was there and the trauma theyāve endured. but i feel most strongly for the victims in colorado and minneapolis whose stories are now being ignored in the name of political martyrdom.
tldr; this is a wake up call to enact strong gun control laws and a reminder that the more you cherry-pick your rhetoric, the deeper you dig yourself into a hole no one is going to help you out of.
