Permission had been granted and plans had been made. One the day of their departure, Rapunzel found herself awake even earlier than usual, too excited to be leaving the kingdom at last to sleep any longer. She let Pascal continue to slumber, but got dressed and snuck down to Eugene’s room, to spend some quality time with him before breakfast.

“Y-your Majesty…” I froze, unsure how to respond to the sudden kiss. “But your……. your husband…”

“What?” she asked, unable to understand what she heard. She tried to look for a sign of hope on the Queen’s face, but nothing could tell her otherwise. She was telling her as it was.

Cassandra dropped the tray she was holding. The plate and goblet scattered over the floor, far from her mind. The words echoed in her mind.

She dropped to her knees, wailing. Her sobs were muffled by her hands, shielding her face from the world. As tall as she had stood a minute ago, all that was left of her now was a crumbling heap of sorrow.
