so in this tutorial iāll be showing 3 tools: eraser, pen, and quick selection
what youāll need:
photoshop (iām using cs6)
knowledge on how to make a gif (tutorial here)
a shit ton of patience
probably an arm massage afterwards
the directions, pictures, and other shit is going to be under the cut as always :)
EDIT: nowadays i only use the pen tool (not in the way i showed in this tutorial tho) bc itās easier once you figure out how to use it properly.
before you do anything, make sure you've already made your gif
also, i apologize for any grammar mistakes made. i was lazy and didnāt really proofread bc this was so fucking long
METHOD 1: ERASER TOOL
in case you have no idea where the eraser tool is (in relation to the rest of the tools) here it is, circled in red:
this is probably the easiest tool to use, but most time consuming
if youāve ever cleaned up manga or cut a character out of a manga on ps, this is basically the same thing
if the character is moving a lot (a different position almost every frame) i would highly recommend you use this tool over the pen and quick selection tool.
this tool is pretty easy to use because itās a lot like the paint brush tool
just outline the character in each frame (remember to include their black outline)
even though iām putting this in the eraser method section, this goes for all methods: try to chose gifs withoutĀ āholes,ā or this
itās a pain in the ass to cut them out. trust me.
METHOD 2: PEN TOOL
in case you have no idea where the pen tool is (in relation to the rest of the tools) here it is, circled in red:
this tool isnāt my favorite to use, but itās great when the your character is easy to cut out (no stray hairs, no holes, just one solid piece)
you should use this tool when the character is in the same position so itās less work and it keeps the cutout consistent (in the finished gif, you can see that there are inconsistencies with kaoriās hand near the end)
place points to outline the characterĀ
use the convert point tool (itās in the sub-menu for the pen tool) to make smooth curves
once youāve plotted your points all the way around, connect the last point with the first to close it (the path should turn into a solid outline without any points)
push in [CTRL + ENTER] to turn the path into a selection (you should see the āmarching antsā). select the inverse of it, then press the backspace key on your keyboard to delete the background
METHOD 3: QUICK SELECTION TOOL
in case you have no idea where the quick selection tool is (in relation to the rest of the tools) here it is, circled in red:
probably the trickiest tool to use because it doesnāt do what you want it to do and itās not very precise compared to the eraser and pen tool.
only use this when there isnāt too much going on in the background and the character does not have a lot ofĀ
in the upper left hand corner, use the (+) and (-) selection things to increase the selection, or decrease the selection, respectively.
i almost never use this tool because of this:
IāM MISSING THE OUTLINE (and a bit of her hair) but it only took me 2 minutes to do so i guess itās worth noting that this tool is the fastest out of all the other ones.
*i redid this frame with the eraser method
and now youāre done cutting out the character!
to put a color background, place a new layer at the very bottom, then press [SHIFT + F5] and choose [color] from the drop-down menu then proceed to pick your color.
to add text behind the character, put the text layer before the colored layer
this looks really nice when the character is moving a lot
after youāre done, put your coloring on it (optional) and then save for web as a gif.
TIPS
avoid cutting out characters who have āholesā (ex. hair loops) because they will contain the background and, honestly, itās a fucking mess to get them out.
make sure you are on the same frame and corresponding layer. if you have no idea which layer you are one, look at the layers panel to find the layer with theĀ āeye.āĀ
use a new layer and color it white. put it behind all the layers (at the very bottom). go through the frames now (they should all have a white background to them) and check to see if there are any missing things you forgot to cut out
always save as a psd.Ā
use the zoom feature to your advantage! the reason why i love ps so much over other editing applications is because you can zoom up to 3200%, which is down to the pixel (not that youāll really need that tho)
donāt be like me and choose a gif with almost 30 frames. your arm will feel like dying.
*edit (4/23/17): oh my fucking god i forget to cut out a hole fuuuuck

A request for an Akatsuki no Ā Yona PSD; it looks great on almost every scene Iāve tried so please have fun with it! I adjust the curves sometimes depending on the brightness of the scene but otherwise, it is honestly very versatile.Ā
This tutorial and resource list is for @kingkuchiki.
Recently, you asked me to teach you my ways on coloring manga caps. I donāt exactly have a way to color manga panels, but I here are some tutorials and resources Iāve found. Hope this helps.
Note: I used to use Paint Tool Sai to color manga panels, but the software glitched so I now I use Fire Alpaca. Itās similar to Sai.

I originally coded this for my studyblr but decided to release it as well since itās just a simple take on Tumblrās default mobile theme. The colors are taken from Seijouās school colors as the pastel tones put me at ease whenever I scroll down my blog. The Aoba Johsai logo does NOT come with the theme. A request for a 3-Gatsu no Lion PSD; I actually havenāt heard of this anime before but itās got shogi in it and thatās pretty dope. I had a lot of fun with this and made sure to keep the yellows and darker browns rich and pretty.
EDIT: i DO NOT color like this anymore. this tutorial is sooo old omg.
okay. iām assuming you already know how to make a gif. if not, check out my gif tutorial. it shows you how to capture frames and assemble a gif using kmplayer and photoshop.Ā
btw, the reason why you can see me using a preset is because iām not going to go back and redo a gif i already made a psd for.
all you need is photoshop. iām using CS6 in this tutorial bc itās what i used in the gif tutorial.Ā
before you read this, just know that you need to play around with adjustments to find what you like (and that i frequently cuss in this tutorial).
1. curves
curves are basically used to change the overall tonal range of a picture.Ā
i made the gif lighter in this instance, but curves can also be used to make pictures darker. it just depends on how you bend the curve
(rule of thumb: up curve = lighter // down curve = darker)
2. hue/saturation
hue: changes what hue the colors in the pic are and affects all colors so use this with caution. if you find that the hue adjustment is changing too many colors and the gif doesnāt looks really good, move on to selective color.
saturation: changes how intense the colors are (i donāt use this too often)
for this gif, i shifted the hue slider to the left (-17) to give it more of a cyan hue.
3. selective color
youāre going to see me repeat this step again like 2 other times.
i fucking love selective color btw
selective color lets you modify one color without touching the rest.
you can take a color (red, yellow, orange, green, cyan, blue, magenta, black, white, neutral) and manipulate it using the sliders to change that colorās hue/tone/saturation. for example, you can make blacks super dark and rich or turn blues to purples using the sliders.Ā
the hue sliders are pretty self explanatory. examples: to increase the amount of magenta in the color red use the magenta slider and swish it to the right; to make a dark blue pastel purple, in the color blue, use the black slider and move it to the left to decrease the colorās pigment and use the magenta slider to increase the amount of pink in the blue (pink + blue = purple).Ā
in my opinion, this tool is something youāre going to need to experiment with. you wonāt get it right with the first try.
depending on when you use selective color, your gif may turn out with a different look. using multiple selective color layers allows for the precise adjusting of colors.
for this gif, in the color black, i moved the black bar all the way (+100) to the right, which made it very saturated and dark (i wanted no-face to stand out).
4. brightness/contrast
brightness: make the highlights lighter/darker.
contrast: make the shadows lighter/darker.
i just made it brighter (+50) for this gif bc i attempted to make it a pastel gif
5. selective color
again, this is me making the color black in this gif darker.
6. selective color
so now iām manipulating the cyans and blues.
iām making the cyans and blues in the gif more prominant by increasing the cyan, magenta, and black. iām also making it less green by decreasing the yellow in each color.
7. selective color
this basically made the gif pastel-looking.
i used this to make everything lighter and more pastel bc it didnāt make no-face look gray; he was still very dark (which was how i wanted him to be).
changing the black setting for the color neutral wonāt always work in making gifs pastel. it just happened to do so for this one.
8. save as a gif
make sure the gif is under 3mb
make sure the width is above 540px (thatās tumblrās current width for the desktop dashboard)
if there is pixelation, try using surface blur (lol idk how to use that with a gif)
please do not steal/claim this coloring as yours.
the end result is this gif:

A request for a Sailor Moon Crystal PSD; itās vibrant and works nicely in bright scenes because it adds a really refreshing peachy tone to things if that makes any sense? The darker blues are also more cyan now and the reds are very pronounced.
