#anigozanthos

A flowering, bird-pollinated perennial endemic to SW Australia, growing up to 1m in height, but half the size of the more famous Kangaroo Paw Anigozanthos manglesii. That's probably why they named it after a smaller animal.

First described by John Lindley in his 1840 work A sketch of the vegetation of the Swan River Colony. Three subspecies are recognised, but I don't know which ones you get around Wongan Hills.

The rest of the eleven species are also endemics to the SW, but have become hugely popular ornamentals elsewhere in Australia, as well as being WA's state flower.

Anigozanthos manglesii

Anigozanthos is an Australian genus in the family Haemodoraceae, and the name “kangaroo paws” is often used for them.The flowers come in various colors, but one of the most striking is Anigozanthos manglesii, with its vivid red-and-green flowers. When the tubular flowers open, they peel back a bit to show their pale green inside hue, as well as their yellow stamens. Native to Western Australia.
