first of all, your sound is so good, the vocals and lyrics are unique and abstract and rotten is a JAM. but anyway. i just wanted to kind of ask what your guys' creative process was like? how each song comes together, etc. I'm just starting to really polish songs and record them and I'm just curious as to how others do it
i kinda want everyone’s input on this so let’s see
avery: thank you! i really love rotten too (i think the whole band does). my portion is kinda rough because i don’t own a drum kit yet! so my writing of parts happens in my head, on borrowed kits, and sitting in front of nate’s computer with a keyboard and screaming. worked with milo on a couple of songs in various locations in nate’s house at absurd hours of the morning over the summer as well. i usually hear basic demos of songs and work on parts in my head as we smooth it out.
nate: im usually the one who kinda gets us started on songs, with the exception of sea & sky ii which ave and milo wrote on my living room floor at three in the morning while they were over this summer. i’m a writer, so when something comes to me i’ll write it down in the notes app on my phone and work on it until i like it. i send it to milo, we work out some chords and a melody and polish it, and then there’s a lot of sending files back and forth to different band members until we get something like a finished product worked out.
milo: tysm !! and this is. such a hard question for me because whenever I work on music I basically always do it differently. but as Nate said, he usually starts us off and sends me lyrics he’s working on then sometimes I write some stuff too in the same vein as his words (see: whenever I have a verse) but sometimes it’s all him and he sends me the chords and then I just. take my synths in logic and go to TOWN. but it’s really always a different process like sea and sky which started as me me ave messing around with synths on my computer and then someone was like, shit, this should be on the ep. but yeah it’s a lot of sending back and forth and people making different changes and recommendations until we end up with something we like!
