The Mexican summer heat was only barely relieved by a sudden downpour, sending most folks scurrying for shelter while children shrieked in delight. Shelter today was a dimly lit bar, the various conversations around the room left at a similarly low tone. All except one table surrounded by a small crowd as a poker game got deeper and more expensive. And dangerous.
Of course, it might have been difficult to pay attention to some fat cats playing a card game when one of the patrons at the table (a crisply dressed gent with an American accent despite his grunts in Spanish) was holding in his lap a peculiar young lady. It would not take long watching her to know she wasn't human, as difficult as it might be to believe a machine shaped like one could be holding the conversation she was. Instead of skin, she had panels of gleaming gold, each meeting in neat seams. Art deco engravings decorated her collarbone and the parts of her arms that lay bare.
Unfortunately, the game was getting more and more important as tokens piled high and the robot's chipper speech was becoming more of a hindrance than an attractive feature. The rich American pat her leg and grunted for her to "Take a walk". A little wobbly at first, the robot stood and stepped off, looking unsure in a sea of drunken eyeballs. Maybe the man who had only just stepped in from the rain would be a safe bet?
