Even I hate me for this but I need to feel good about something right now, so hereâs a teaser of my writing session today for AnĂ©anti.
This is barely edited and by the time it sees the light of day it may look nothing like this at all, but for the moment Iâm vibing so share my good vibes.
Excerpt:
âYou and Joseph are more than welcome to stay tonight. Weâve certainly got room enough.â Isobel understands that this being Phyllisâ long weekend means itâll be the last one for a long time, likely the rest of the year. Itâs hazards of the job and she knows Phyllis wonât accept her mother-henning. She knew full well what she was getting into and, more than that, would insist this is Isobelâs time to enjoy. Her own will come in due season and besides, life with Joseph is anything but boring.
Phyllis levels Isobel with a look. âI say this with the utmost respect. You know I love you, but the absolute last thing you and Richard need tonight is company.â On seeing Isobelâs raised eyebrow, she adds, âGo on then. Tell me Iâm wrong.â
Isobelâs silence is all the answer she needs.
âAny other time Iâd say yes in a moment. Iâm thrilled for you, Izzy. For both of you. And thatâs why, for tonight, Iâm going to pass.â
âYou know Iâll worry about you driving home late.â
âOh, do stop! Iâve booked us into a b&b in the village, and Iâll be the one driving us there. Not Joseph. Alright? So donât worry.â
âI love Joseph, you know that. Itâs nothing against him. Or you.â
âNo, I know. He canât hold his liquor any better than the two of you!â Phyllis shoots her a sideways glance full of mirth. Isobel feigns offence and fails, the two women giggling as Isobel bumps Phyllisâ elbow with her own.
âIâm not sure I know what to do with this cheeky side of you,â Isobel teases. âJosephâs rubbing off. Itâs good, Phyll. Heâs been good for you.â
Phyllis goes quiet again, bashful. The tops of her high cheekbones flush pink. âThat he has,â she murmurs. âTo say nothing of what Richardâs done for you.â She follows her friendâs line of sight as it shifts to the aforementioned man and watches their eyes lock on one another again. âHeâs going to take you apart.â
Itâs hushed, barely audible, and the last thing she ever expected to hear from the mouth of Phyllis Molesley. Isobel gasps, her entire face going beetroot.
âItâs alright, you know! Weâre both married women here!â
Isobel hides her face in her hands, mortified. âPhyllis, I swear to God, if it was anyone but youââ
âOh, you donât want to know what Bez had to say.â
âIâm sure I donât!â
âYour innocent ears would burst into flame!â
âYouâre one to talk, miss meek and mild!â
Phyllis is laughing in earnest now and it warms Isobel through: the fact that sheâs able to form this kind of bond now that other women are no longer her juniors, her competition. The fact that her friend is so happy after all the hardship sheâs come through. Itâs a good day to be alive, a good season into which sheâs arrived. Serendipitous.
âRight then. Iâm getting out of your hair. Iâve got a drunk husband to put to bed, and you âŠâ
â... Will thank you not to finish that sentence!â Isobel cackles.
âJust âŠâ Phyllis says in parting, âjust mind you donât wax philosophical for too much longer. Youâll miss all the action! Byeee!â She skips out the door, dodging Isobelâs attempt to swat her with the tea towel, and is off across the lawn to collect Joseph.
Isobel is left shaking her head, grinning, arms folded across her middle as she watches Richard come to the realisation that theyâre alone now.
