IMHO, Flat Design means going back to basics!
It is not a category of design or a fad. It is simply properly efficient design that enhances clarity and allows the content and its message to come to the fore.
If the content cannot do its job free from embellishment then it is bad content and/or employs bad hierarchy or contrast.
Every embellishment must earn its way into your design. If it doesn't provide an essential (required) benefit, it should be considered a problem and not an asset.
All other uses of embellishment are gratuitous and therefore damage or destroy the design.
content design should be functionally efficient.
