Rewatching ‘Private Practice’: “Crime and Punishment”
As a new segment on WhatSamWatches, I will now be doing more informal reviews/commentaries on what I’m watching. And it’ll include shows I’ll be rewatching just because I feel like it. I did a review on Private Practice not that long ago but I’m binging the show from the beginning all over again anyway. So since I rewatched the seventh episode of season two last time, we’re now onto the eighth…

A thought on Sebastian LaCroix’s accent.
I know we have discussed the point about how he pronounces his own name (I.E. there’s not a point in the game where he actually says it).
However, another aspect of this is his accent. I’ve seen some say he has a British accent but I don’t think that at all. It sounds like Andy Milder was doing a Mid-Atlantic Accent.
If you watch old films (1930s-1960s), you will hear quite a few American actors speak in that manner, but I don’t think you see very often today. In much the same way, you won’t hear the RP English accent in the UK anymore, but if you watch films or tv/radio broadcasts from the c.1930s-60s they will all have this very crisp, clear elocution).
Now, it could be that Milder just couldn’t do a real British accent (but... it makes no sense why LaCroix would have that anyway). But, actually the more I think about, choosing to do a Mid-Atlantic accent makes sense because LaCroix went to America in 1930 - and that accent was a prestige accent, therefore obtained with elocution lessons.
