âDo I need to come over-â
âNo! No, Andy.â You sigh over the phone, holding one of the favored toys in your hands. Walking over to a counter to place them gently down on it. âAll is well, nothing⌠disastrous.â
âYou paused in that sentence.â He says skeptically, and you canât help but roll your eyes at that. He knew you a bit too well.
âWell⌠it is the middle of the nightâŚâ You say, looking out the daycares windows and see that it was, in fact, nighttime, and it wasnât easy getting in the daycare at nighttime either. You had to plan it before hand. Set up precautions, more plans and sneak your way in. It was⌠not as fun as youâd like.
âExactly.â Andy sighs over the phone, and you bet heâs rubbing his temples at your defense. âItâs the middle of the night. Iâm wondering where you are, and why youâre not in bed. I call and figure out youâre at the daycare? That has to be illegal.â
âI- wellâŚâ You open and close your mouth, unsure how you could defend against that. It wasnât like you could really tell him that you were trying to help the toys from an evil bear. He didnât know they were⌠alive, and you didnât want it to sound like you belong in a physic ward. âIâm just⌠trying to do some good, citizen work for the teacher when they come back.â
âReally?â He doesnât sound convinced. A warning perhaps as you can hear him over the phone, shuffling about. Rising up from his sleep.
âReally.â You nod, even if he canât see it. Trying to scramble up your mind for something quick to jumble his. Your eyes watching his the toys were reuniting after you saved them from⌠what was it? That pit of fire? âOr would you like me to tell you of a crazy story?â
âIf that makes you return home, fine.â Andy sighs, sounding like he sat back down again. Almost if heâs trying to debate to come get you or not, and trap you in a room to keep you from doing these⌠weird things you have been doing lately, and it seems rather closely connected to his old toys⌠He passes that up quickly however. Thinking your just⌠a collector of toysâŚ
âIâl be on my ways soon.â You reassure Andy, sounding amused. âSo, the story starts with a purple bear named Lotso who was evil to the other toys, gambling, ruling them over, all that good stuff-â
You explain the story of how you and the toys night went from beginning to end, but phrase it in a third person view. Always making sure youâre not blowing any of the cover of the toys you know that are alive, and to make sure youâre not sounding like a psycho.
There was a big pause when you finished. A roll of anxiety rushing through you as you wait for Andysâ tired response. ââŚDid you come up with that?â
âNo, thatâs what the children imagine, silly.â You smile, amused and saving yourself. Blaming it on the children rather when it was the actual real deal. âThey have rather big imaginations you know.â
He sighs at that, seemingly relieved by that clarification. If all that was real? He would have a come apart, and who knows what he would do then? Illegally enter the daycare like you did.
âRight⌠can you please come home now?â He demands of you tiredly over the phone. Leaning back in the bed. âI donât want you to be caught, working overtime in a daycare.â
You grin at that before nodding, moving to grab your keys off the counter. The toys good enough on their own for the time being before they will be dragged away by Bonnie in the morning. âIâll be home soon, go back to bed.â
âYou better.â He warns, grunting before laying back down.

âHas anyone seen Woody?â Buzz questioned when he noticed Woodyâs disappearance.
Only then did all the toys in Bonnieâs room notice the Sheriffâs absence. They had just had another successful playtime with Bonnie that afternoon before Bonnieâs parents decided to have dinner outside.
âHuh, I couldâve sworn he was right here..â Jessie muttered as she turned to look around her. Bullseye followed her stare as she looked around as if to make sure she didnât leave anything behind.
A few mutterings and suggestions of where Woody could be but that wasnât helping. Buzz notified Jessie that he would search for Woody and left swiftly out the door. Buzz did a quick sweep through the rooms upstairs and downstairs and couldnât find signs of the cowboy.
âCâmon, Woody⌠where did you go?â Buzz said worriedly as he stopped at the top of the stairs.
Buzz has checked everywhere at this point. The downstairs, the upstairs but wait- the attic. Buzz whirled around to the attic trapdoor. There are two ways up to the attic. The trapdoor, or the route the toys would usually use, is the vents. Buzz forced open the vents and crawled in. Buzz made his way up the vents and arrived in the attic.
It was dark, but thankfully Buzzâs glow brightened the room. Buzz stood there for a moment, just scanning the room to assess his surroundings. Many boxes were stacked along with other unused furniture. Buzz took a few steps forward until he was in the middle of the attic.
ââŚSheriff?â Buzz whispered in the dark room.
At first, there was no response. Buzz stayed a little longer and that's when he heard a scraping noise. Buzz aimed his laser at the sound, and there he saw an undeniable cowboy boot being quickly pulled back behind some boxes.
Buzz exhaled, âWoody! There you are, everyone is worried about you,â To be fair, he was mostly, but clarification wasnât needed at the moment.
Before Buzz could move closer, the boxes were pushed, almost dropping on Buzz if he had not dodged. Buzz stood up confused and turned back to where Woody was supposed to be. No one was there.
A slight creak caught his attention, Buzz looked up and noticed the small round pivot window was slightly ajar and some boots were struggling to climb up.
âWoody!â Buzz called out as he parkoured his way up to the window and pulled himself up.
âWoody?!â Buzz called out again.
âCome on, Buzz. Go away!â An irritated voice responded.
Relief washed over Buzz as he finally found Woody. But he was pulling back. Why?
Buzz stood carefully on the window and looked up. The distance from the window to the roof wasnât that far. Just a short but steep climb. Buzz went for it, with a jump and grab on the ledge.
âWhy are you doing this, Sheriff?â Buzz asked, trying not let the silence seep in.
Buzz could hear a scoff from up above, "Wouldn't you like to know, ranger boy,â which just makes Buzz frown in confusion.
âSheriff, is something bothering you? If so, we can talk.â Buzz suggested as he moved his feet to launch himself to the next ledge.
Woody laughed, but not the infectious laugh that he loved catching, this was sarcastic. âWhat good is talking gonna do, Buzz?â.
Buzz looked up and calculated his next jump, âWell, itâll get some things off your chest. That I do know.â
Buzz could hear a hum, Woodyâs way of saying âwhateverâ. Buzz was now more confused than worried. Woody seemed distressed about something but he is unwilling to speak about it which makes Buzz uneasy. How is he supposed to help Woody if Woody doesnât tell him or at least speak about whatâs troubling him to Buzz?
Buzz leapt up and grabbed the edge of the roof tile, and pulled himself up to finally see Woodyâs back facing him.
âSheriff, talk to me,â Buzz managed to grunt out.
Woody visibly stiffens as he glances back to Buzz, who is still trying to pull himself up.
Woody held his stare, âIâm surprised you fit through the window,â.
Buzz laughed, âIâm not that big,â he responded jokingly which made Woody laugh softly.
Buzz scans Woodyâs expression before asking, âWhatâs wrong?â.
This makes Woody stiffen in his posture again. Woody absentmindedly faced away from Buzz again, which made Buzzâs inside twist. If he had insides, that is. Buzz lifted his foot to the roof tile to pull himself up but he stepped on a slippery tile. His foot slipped on the tile which made him lose balance and temporarily fall.
Woody heard the slip and turned around to see Buzz gone.
âBuzz?..â Woody called out.
No response.
âBuzz?!?â Panic now settled in his voice.
Woody stood up quickly and went over the ledge to see if Buzz was still there.
Buzz was fine. He was currently pulling himself back up on the ledge and up the roof tile again. Woody exhaled a sigh of relief as he watched Buzz pull himself up the roof this time.
âI thought you were gone..â Woody tried to sound like he didnât care which he very much did.
Buzz dusted himself and responded, âItâll take more than that to get rid of me.â.
âRight, because youâre Buzz Lightyear. Youâd probably fly off or something instead of fall..â Woody muttered as he sat down again and turned his back to Buzz again.
Buzz moved forward and sat next to Woody, âWoody⌠what's wrong?â he tried again.
âNothing,â Woody responded too quickly.
âNothing is wrong, Buzz. Iâm ok. Youâre ok. Bonnieâs ok. Weâre all ok so stop worrying so much, Space Ranger.â Woody teased in that tone they usually do.
Buzz blinked, eyes staring dead at Woodyâs âokâ face. Something wasnât right. It almost sounds like Woody himself was convincing himself that he was ok. Nothing about this was ok.
âIf youâre ok-â
âWhich I am.â Woody cuts Buzz off with a convincing tone.
Buzz continues anyway, â-you wouldnât go through all the trouble to climb up to the roof and hide away from me.â
Woody sighed and looked away. Buzz waits as the night breeze fills the silence. The tree near them sways as a slight rustling of the leaves harmonises with the breeze. A long sigh interrupts the harmony.
âI donât know, Buzz.. I just feel out of it latelyâŚâ Woody finally found his wording.
Buzzâs gaze never left him, âOut of what?â he asked for more clarification.
âYâknow..â Woody says as he gestures his hands, â..the whole acting thing. Whenever it's playtime with Bonnie, I just canât help but think about Andy, Buzz..â.
Buzz nodded, âSo thatâs what this is about,â.
âWhat else would it be about, Buzz?â Woody exasperated as he adjusted his seating.
âEvery time Bonnie plays with me, I see him, Buzz..â Woody grips his knees.
Woody struggled to find his wording, âI hear his laugh.. I hear his voiceâŚ. and on the worst days, I⌠just.. see him..â
Buzz listened intently. If toys could, Woody would probably look pale or have bags under his eyes. But instead, his plastic face maintained his rosy and healthy appearance. Hiding away all his struggles and emotions.
Buzz hesitated, but he gently lifted his hand and placed it over Woodyâs hand, which was gripping his own knee too tightly.
Woody glanced down at his hand then to Buzz.
âWoody, I donât know how you feel,â Buzz said carefully, âThe bond you have with Andy is stronger than I or any of the others have ever had.â.
Woody blinked as Buzz continued, picking his words carefully, âBut after everything youâve been through, I want you to know that Iâm here for you.â Buzz squeezed Woodyâs hand firmly and reassuringly.
Woody exhaled softly, â..sometimes I wonder.. if Andy could see me.. the real me⌠oh, what would he think of me nowâŚ.â he stared off into the distance.
âHeâd be so disappointed..â
Buzz watched Woody carefully, and with certainty said âWell.. I think youâre very admirable. Youâre brave. Youâre strong, even if youâre soft on the inside⌠and youâre loyal no matter what. Any kid would be crazy to turn away a toy like you.â.
Woody exhaled a laugh, âGee Buzz⌠one day youâre as expressive as a rock then the next youâre-â Woody paused when he realised Buzz was staring at him now.
Blue to brown. Contrasting colours yet they look so good against each other if paired.
âI will always be here to help you, Woody,â Buzz stated like it was a pledge.
Woody exhaled, his body relaxing yet still slightly anxious. A smile crept up his face though after a while.
Woody laughed softly, âAlways?â.
Buzz squeezed his hand again, even firmer now. âAlways.â.
They sat there a little longer. Buzz is not letting go of Woodyâs hand the whole time. After a while of watching the stars, and getting comfortable, Woody only realised he was leaning on Buzz the entire time. Woody on impulse sat straight up which startled Buzz.
Woody cleared his throat, âSorry- Buzz, I didnât realise-â.
Buzz smiled and chuckled, âItâs fine, Woody. Just.. relax,â he reassured.
ââŚthank you,â Woody relaxed.
Buzz smiled, âJust do me a favour and try not to jump out of windows when Iâm trying to help.â He nudged Woodyâs shoulders to get a laugh.
Woody laughed, âBossy much?â.
âMerely concerned.â Buzz corrected.
They shared a few more laughs that night before finally heading back inside. Woody might still feel the occasional loneliness and longing for Andy, but Buzz is now always there for him.
Even if the whole thing with Andyâs dad being Woodyâs original owner and being named Andy too isnât real. The lore still adds so much to the movies. You have Woody, Mr. PotatoHead, and Slinky being trapped in a box like Jessie giving them a similar experience. You also have it being Andy senior wrote âAndyâ on Woodyâs foot making that scene in Toy Story 2 so much more heartbreaking. You have Woody at first confusing the two Andyâs, but then when everyone hears about how old the three of Andy seniorâs toys are they start to realize that the dates donât make sense if the Andyâs are the same. If they were than Andy would be a lot older since Woody was from a long time ago. Then other differences start happening, why Andy no longer had glasses, the little sister, the mom being different, and other things start to come back to them.
Also Woody being the only Woody doll other than the one used for the show (which seems to be a puppet) is just so interesting to think about especially when you have the others learning about it along with Woody. I saw something about Woody meeting the one from the show and the show Woody becoming an enemy but imagine if the show Woody knew he was toy and that the Woody in front of him is also a toy. Imagine him overhearing the adults talk about the cancellation of the show and the whole cereal prize thing. Imagine him thinking the prototype was thrown away. Then he meets our Woody. Also Woody being a PROTOTYPE is interesting because a prototype is not the finished product itâs the first but there was no chance for any others with changes to be made. Both Andyâs are lucky that the prototype turned out well from what we see.
Also thereâs the âsnake in my bootâ scene with Boonie at the end of toy story 3. If Woody is the only one that exists than how did she know if not from this Woody making Andyâs reaction that much more interesting. Because imagine your dad passed down this one of kind toy that no other person has. Then imagine years later a little girl says one of the lines they toy has (pull string toy). But you know she couldnât have had your toy so how? Maybe she watched the old show the toy is from. But that show was canceled when your dad was a kid when everything on tv was black and white so itâs not likely she watched. So how?

A few days ago, I came across a post in the Toy Story 5 tag complaining about a change between the first three Toy Story movies (a.k.a. the "Andy Trilogy") and the most recent two (a.k.a. the "Bonnie" films, which might become a "Bonnie Trilogy" if they make a Toy Story 6).
That difference is the toys' role in the kids' lives. In the "Andy Trilogy," toys are for playing: they exist to be played with and they love to be played with. That's what it's all about. But in the Bonnie movies, there's much more emphasis on the toys finding ways to secretly help kids outside of play: e.g. Woody helping Bonnie create Forky at school, his ultimate new life with Bo Peep of helping kids and ownerless toys find each other, and the efforts in Toy Story 5 to help Bonnie make friends.
The post complained that the series has seemingly switched from "toys as toys" to "toys as good fairies who secretly help you."
Now, personally, I don't see that change as something worth complaining about. But I do see it as interesting. I had never noticed it before, but now I see that it's true.
Now, maybe this change in focus relates to the changes behind the scenes, since unlike the Andy Trilogy, the fourth and fifth movies were made without John Lasseter. (A change I'm fully in favor of because of the #MeToo issues that led to his departure, but it could have caused some creative inconsistency.) But still, Lasseter did work on the fourth movie's story before he resigned. And more importantly, Andrew Stanton has been a head writer of all five films' screenplays, and has now directed Toy Story 5, after having been one of the main story-builders of the first film back in the '90s. You'd think he would take care to preserve a consistent tone!
Maybe it could also be the influence of Inside Out, which of course came along between Toy Story 3 and Toy Story 4. Fans have always noticed the parallels between the toys of Toy Story and the emotions of Inside Out: a group of beings who love and devote their lives to a child without their knowing about it. And the plot of the first Inside Out film has obvious parallels with the original Toy Story (with Joy corresponding to Woody, Sadness to Buzz, and Riley to Andy), while Toy Story 5 parallels Inside Out 2 (Bonnie corresponding to Riley, Jessie to Joy, and Lilypad to Anxiety). Since the emotions in the Inside Out films obviously exist to help their person, maybe subconsciously those movies influenced the Pixar creative team to reimagine the Toy Story toys as helpers rather than only existing for play.
But maybe the difference is better explained by Watsonian reasons (in-universe) than Doylist reasons (behind the scenes).
In the fourth film, Woody's focus on secretly helping Bonnie, and ultimately on helping other kids find abandoned toys, is precisely because Bonnie doesn't play with him anymore. It's all about finding a new purpose as a toy who isn't played with.
As for why the theme of "toys secretly helping Bonnie" continues in the fifth film, I think it reflects the fact that Bonnie has a different personality from Andy and different needs.
Andy was an average, outgoing, popular boy. We see this in the number of friends who come to his birthday party in the original film, and the fact that in the second film he goes off to sleep-away camp without a hint of nervousness. Bonnie, on the other hand, is a shy, "weird" girl, who is scared to start school in the fourth film and then has trouble fitting in with other kids in the fifth. Between this and her wild imagination and creativity, it's easy to headcanon her as being on the autism spectrum. But whether you do or not, it makes sense that she needs a little more support than Andy did, which the toys give her.
If they do make a Toy Story 6, I'll be interested to see whether it continues the theme of "toys as secret helpers" or goes back to "toys exist to be played with." We'll see.
Iâve been getting back into my love for this series recently, due to coping with the eventual 5th film, so hereâs some mini hcs for fun.
đ The first few games in which Andy used Woody and Bo in the âhero and his damsel in distressâ roles is how their relationship got started.
đ Jessie didnât had any toy friends during her life with Emily, as all the plastic horses couldnât speak. This further deepens Jessieâs sorrow of losing her one true friend she believed she had.
đ Full-on animal based toys like Hamm, Slinky and Rex never used to talk, until witnessing their kids and other humans doing so, or other more verbal toys, they pick up talking quickly.
đ By the time of TS3, Sid had completely repressed his memory of his toys coming to life. But who knows, if he had saw Woody again, it mightâve triggered him.
đ Despite now being aware heâs a toy, Buzz occasionally likes to stargaze. If Woody and/or Jessie join him, he jokingly points out ridiculously-named constellations.
đ Woody would still end up having nightmares of the incinerator incident, but donât worry, as huddling up with Bullseye and patting his mane calms him down.
đ Mr and Mrs Potato Head gave names to their little green men children; they just canât tell them apart so they rarely call them out loud.
đ Andy had a slight feeling deep down that he knew his toys are alive, as the way he spoke about Woody being true, and how he said to them: âThanks, guys.â
Bonus:
đ The 4th and 5th films take place in a separate universe - how else would you explain Boâs new personality in the flashback and Buzz being dumb?
