Have you ever see the “macchina barocca” in action at Chiesa del Gesù? Each day, at 5,30 p.m., the painting slides away in the floor and reveals the statue of St. Ignatius while loud religious music is played. The statue and the altar, designed by Andrea Pozzo between 1696 and 1700, is a triumph of gold and precious stones such as lapis lazuli. The statue is shown for 30 minutes, then it’s hidden again behind the painting.
