Oh man. 

I imagine this would be when they’re both feeling pretty shitty, and vulnerable, and obviously they both vent that through anger. Because Ren failed a direct order from his Master, he let a girl who was strong in the Force escape, and they never got the map to Skywalker; all of this added to the fact that he just killed his father. And Hux just faced the biggest professional failure of his entire life in allowing (or it will be percieved that he allowed it) Starkiller to be destroyed. 

And Hux absolutely blames Ren for this; Ren brought the girl, Ren didn’t disarm the bombs but... there is also fault of his own. It was one of Hux’s troopers, after all, who defected from the Order, who broke his perfect conditioning, and lowered the defenses. 

So anyway, they’re both snarling and injured (Ren obviously more than Hux) and full of anger and hatred and this shaking, tearing loss of control that comes with almost being obliterated. And with nothing else to do they take it out on each other. Yes, Hux is pushing down on the shoulder, is hurting and bleeding Ren, but the Knight is pushing right back; he’s biting and clawing and bloodying his teeth on Hux’s throat because this is as much about punishing himself as it is about punishing Hux. But it’s also a way to prove that they’re alive, that the other is alive, that they’re real and tangible and weren’t lost because that would make everything much worse. And the blood hides the tears oh, so very well.

It’s absolutely abusive, but I think in a way it’s also something that they both need from each other; a sense of accountability and a reminder that they both survived. I mean, I also imagine when it’s all said and done, Hux would strive to undo the damage that he caused. He would be there to patch Ren up, to make a rough comment about the girl who marred such a lovely face, and to stay shuddering and desperately trying to ignore what comes next.
