joshua being active on weverse holy shit what a time to be alive
I really like how the LOTR films make Aragorn more deeply responsible for Boromir’s death than he was in the books.
In the books, Boromir tries to take the Ring because he lost hope in Lothlorien.
But in the films, Boromir tries to take Ring after Aragorn refuses to lead the Fellowship to Gondor. It wasn’t Gandalf’s death or Galadriel’s visions that destroyed his last hope-- it was believing that he was alone, that the Fellowship (especially Aragorn) had abandoned Gondor and abandoned him. It was the way Aragorn referred to Minas Tirith as “your city” instead of “our city.”
So book!Aragorn and film!Aragorn both blame themselves for Boromir’s death, and they both have good reason to?
In the books, Aragorn blames himself because he ordered Boromir to look after Merry and Pippin, and Boromir died looking after Merry and Pippin.
But in the films, Aragorn blames himself for Boromir’s death because he was the one who accidentally drove Boromir to desperation.
Like-- in the books, the Fellowship was always planning to break up at Amon Hen, and Aragorn agreed that Boromir/other members of the Fellowship could go off to help defend Gondor. I think that if film!Aragorn had done that-- if he hadn’t been so afraid of confronting his responsibility to Minas Tirith, and had been willing to compromise like book!Aragorn was--- then film!Boromir wouldn’t have tried to take the Ring, the Fellowship wouldn’t have been scattered when the Uruk-Hai arrived, and Boromir wouldn’t have been killed.
So film!Aragorn didn’t just make a tragic random mistake....Boromir died as a direct result of Aragorn’s central character flaws.
He died as a direct result of Aragorn’s fear of confronting his relationship to Gondor, his lack of faith in mankind/in himself, his refusal to face his problems directly, and his fear of his own identity.
Again, book Aragorn just made a tragic error? Boromir’s death was still an important moment for his character bc it tied into his fear of making the wrong choices as a leader, but it was ultimately something he couldn’t have predicted.
But in the Pj films the problem wasn’t that Aragorn made an earnest mistake, the problem was.......everything about Aragorn as a person, lol. Boromir’s death was a “wake-up call” where the character flaws Aragorn refused to deal with ended up killing someone he cared about.
I feel like book!Aragorn’s reaction to Boromir’s death was “I messed up and made the wrong choices,” while film!Aragorn’s reaction was “I’ve been a terrible person, everything about the way I’ve seen myself is wrong, and everything about me needs to change.”
sad sad sad sad sad sad sad.
it’s boring! i’m over it!

I tend to draw my more cutesy characters the same way. Blame it on my overconsumption of animes and disneys in my youth tbh. But the reason why animated female characters tend to look the same, is because everytime you scroll the youtube comments section there’s always that one asshole who comments how ‘ugly’ a girl looks if she even looks slightly different from that ‘standard’.
people believe that asshole
the industry believes and is scared of that asshole
but the more our art tries to reflects otherwise,
to hell with that asshole
