This is a cat sarcophagus, although it’s unclear if it’s a sarcophagus for a cat or merely a funerary object made to look like one. Either way, I do picture whoever commissioned it owning a cat with especially large and expressive ears, and that makes me happy.

The discovery of a pet cemetery in ancient Egypt is changing the way archaeologists think about animal companionship in the past.

Egyptians were burying animals from the Early Dynastic period but we generally thought they were buried as status items for the afterlife, rather than as pets. This has been re-evaluated recently, with some redefined as pet burials. It depends primarily on how the animals were laid out. These were from Berenike, which is completely isolated on the southern Red Sea coast. Interesting that this cemetery was found at a place that was self-contained and far away.
