These ducks are found in forested areas of the eastern United States and Canada. In freshwater habitats they mainly eat plant material such as seeds, leaves, grasses, and pondweeds, in tidal zones they feed on mussels, clams, small crustaceans, and arthropods. Usually nesting near water on banks or islands, females line shallow depressions with plant materials and down. They may also nest in large tree cavities or on stumps. Females incubate while males guard the territory until the eggs hatch, when the females are left to care for the ducklings alone.

The number of black ducks at the pond has varied every time I see them, sometimes there are three, sometimes there is just one. On this day, there was only one.
