Another banger thread from tiff_ilosophy, this time on the jade carving Zhang Zheng gave Anaran. 🥺
Ding Yuxi as Zhang Zheng & Anaran in Love in Pavilion, episode 23
君子兰 white clivia]
I’m really excited to share this piece I commissioned from the wonderful @uwibbit! I wanted something lovely and peaceful of Zhang Zheng/Anaran, because their story really stuck with me. It felt so romantic.
I wanted a moment where Anaran wasn’t having to be the protector, where he was allowed to let his guard down and be cared for by Zhang Zheng. I hope those of you who love them like I do also enjoy this. And yes of course those are clivia flowers beside them. 💟
Dreaming of a happy ending for Zhang Zheng and Anaran. Zhang Zheng fakes his death and then saves Anaran at the last minute when they decide to bury him alive to get rid of him. In true drama fashion, they both pull this off with a poison that induces a temporary death-like state. They are buried, and no one is the wiser.
Anaran hides him away and scours the land to find a cure to Zhang Zheng's illness. Maybe when he finds one, he's forced to give up something valuable in exchange for it. But what does Anaran have except Zhang Zheng himself? He exchanges the Dark Sword for it. After all, can he use the Dark Sword now that its wielder is believed to be dead? Surely someone in the Yiqi Alliance would spot the famous blade and grow suspicious.
Zhang Zheng recovers. He is healthy enough, but although he tries, he never regains the full vigor, stamina, and strength it takes to wield a sword like he once had. He dives into scholarship, finding a home in books and ink and scrolls, deciding to use his time to compile stories, to compile history, as they travel across the mortal world. They never stay for more than about a year in the same place, on the small off chance they are found out.
He wears his hair up in a bun, as scholars often do, and his clothes are generally jewel-toned—maroons and blues—in opposition to the light shades he once preferred. Instead of a sword at his side, he tends to have an ink brush stuck in his hair like a pin. He cannot change his face, but these are small things he can do to hide the fact that he used to be someone else.
Anaran still wields his blade, although he has to do it much less often than if he were a part of the Yiqi Alliance. Every once in a while he takes jobs that require his prowess, but Zhang Zheng insists he not take too many risks, that he not engage in anything too unscrupulous. It's not worth the money. They'll find other ways to earn income. Sometimes, his sense of justice may force him to enter battles where members of the Yiqi alliance are involved. The chance of him being recognized is slim (he is dead, after all), but he still wears a mask.
Anaran wears his hair down, a small portion of it pulled back and held with a chai* given to him by Zhang Zheng. He is not and never has been picky about his clothing, usually allowing Zhang Zheng to dress him. Zhang Zheng favors golds and greens, and he swears Anaran wears those colors better than he does. He has always been tender in a way that Anaran still doesn't understand how he deserves.
In public, they go by other names, but in private, they remain Zhang Zheng and Anaran, two boys, now men, who have escaped a cruel fate.
Those who meet them in passing assume they are twin brothers, but those who get to know them beyond mere acquaintanceship know better; know that they'd once returned from the village they were closest to one day, shyly holding crimson wedding garments; that they'd decorated the house they were sharing with 囍 paper cutouts, crossed the saddle together, bowed to heaven, earth, and the family they'd left behind, and then shared cross-cupped wine under the moonlight before falling into bed together.
Know that it was not blood that formed their bond, but something even more powerful, something they'd created themselves.
*chai is a type of two pronged hairpin that is often given as a token to lovers.

May I offer you a WIP of Love in Pavilion tragic Ding Yuxi selfcest yaoi in this troubling time? I'm not going to post the rest until the other episodes air though, just in case something happens that contradicts it (mostly I'm thinking we might see the Zhang parents, which could change something I have planned).
--------------
Zhang Zheng pulled away, leaving a whisper of a brush of his lips against Anaran’s cheeks as he did so. Anaran stared down at the white of his robes, Zheng Zheng’s robes, that he now wore, his cheeks growing pink. “When you kiss me, does it feel strange? To kiss a reflection of yourself…” He talked so little. He didn’t know why he found his lips loose, his words spilling out in a lack of propriety. But did propriety matter so much when Zhang Zheng was going to be gone forever in only five days? When he sat on the edge of the other man’s bed, imitating him, wearing his convalescing robes, with gentle wisps of deep brown hair framing his face like he preferred. When Zhang Zheng had just kissed him, and when he was now gazing at him with the kindest eyes Anaran had ever seen? “Anaran is Anaran,” Zhang Zheng replied, and it was so soft, and it was so gentle and reassuring that he found himself rendered speechless once more. “No matter what the rest of the world sees, I could never see myself when looking at you.” And Anaran kissed him this time, clutching the gauzy fabric of his blue and white school uniform in his fists. He tried to kiss tenderly, and perhaps he did, but he knew it was rougher than Zhang Zheng’s kiss had been. He could never fully be him, never embody his grace, his almost demure nature, under which lay the strength of a boy who had once been one of the most promising young swordsmen of the age. No one else would notice the differences between the pair, but he did. It made sense he couldn’t— Anaran was nothing, just a boy worth a few taels of silver and a name everyone but Zhang Zheng had forgotten by now. Zhang Zheng was the opposite; the heir of the prestigious Zhang family of the Yiqi Alliance— trunks of gold and pearls and a whole temple made of mutton fat jade were not enough to equate his worth.
