#anaphalioides

Originally described as Xeranthemum bellidioides as 1786, but also as various Helichrysum bellidioides subspecies , Gnaphalium bellidioides, Helichrysum prostratum, Gnaphalium prostratum, and Anaphalis prostrata.

The current binomial refers to it's resemblence to the the Pearly Everlasting Anaphalis and the archetypal daisy Bellis perrenis.

A shrub found over much of Aotearoa, although most often in alpine and subalpine open grasslands and cooler climates.

Formerly Helichrysum alpinum. The current name means 'Resembling the Pearly Everlasting', 'from the Alps', although of course Alpine is a now the term for anything from the mountains. In this case, inland ranges of the North Island, and the slopes of the Taranaki/Mt Egmont volcano.

The flowers can also be yellow (both very common for alpine plants) and the seeds are spread by the wind.

The genus is found in New Zealand, the Antipodean and Chatham islands, and New Guinea.

Growing by the path down to the penguin hide at Roaring Bay on Nugget Point (no penguins alas - the population has plummeted in recent years and the colony there may now be extinct).

AKA Anaphalis rupestris, Gnaphalium trinerve, and Gnaphalium hookeri. The current binomial references the resemblance to the Pearly Everlastings in the genus Anaphalis, and renowned British botanist and explorer Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker (1817–1911).
