Luke Skywalker/Darth Vader. Star Wars

Luke learns that Vader is his father. The events that follow unfold nothing like he imagined. On top of that, Vader constantly tries to reach him through the Force and doesn’t leave him alone, even in his thoughts.

At the same time, Luke keeps having the same dream, where he sees a young Jedi with honey-colored hair. One day, he manages to feel his presence in the Force. He was very close—but who is he?

The crew of the ship was flying through the galaxy faster than usual. After the encounter with Vader, the rebels were hurrying to disappear and lose themselves. The Empire must not find them again.

Luke slept restlessly, tossing in his sleep. In his cabin he constantly felt jolts. His head wouldn’t relax at all while the ship was moving at such high speed, even though before Luke could easily fall asleep to these motions.

He touched his forehead and neck, which were covered in sweat. His heart was pounding hard inside his chest. Memories returned to those last words he had heard from Vader:

“Obi-Wan lied to you. I am your father.”

Luke squeezed his eyes shut, feeling everything inside his chest twist together. He raised himself from his sleeping place, rubbing his eyes. In this state he was very weak and vulnerable, and so he couldn’t prevent the intrusion into his mind.

He felt the Force breaking in. So strong and dark that Luke choked for a second. The dark power seemed to squeeze his throat, lifting him through space. Luke closed his eyes, feeling how everything in his body strained, wanting to give in to this power. But he resisted. With an effort of will, he held on.

A voice sounded in his head.

“Luke.”

Luke felt goosebumps run over his body. It was Vader’s voice.

“Father?”

Luke’s voice uncertainly spread through the space. He wasn’t even sure it reached his father. His power was so overwhelming. Luke’s small but bright light pushed through those shadows with difficulty.

But his father heard him. Luke felt his breathing falter, felt him fall silent for a moment. Luke closed his eyes, trying to calm his own heartbeat. He breathed slowly and loudly in the cabin, reaching out with his voice into the distant space.

“My son,” came his father’s deep, dark voice. Luke felt warmth spread through his chest and blinked rapidly, trying to focus. He sent his father a signal that he was listening.

“The trajectory your ship has taken is unsafe,” Vader said. Luke listened silently. “I am going to find you.”

Luke felt a tight knot of nerves form inside him and then snap. He instantly got to his feet. The crew was asleep, but he had to wake them…

“That would be a mistake, Luke,” Vader said firmly. Luke heard cold notes in his voice. The softness he had heard when his father called him “son” was gone. Luke felt as if the Force was holding his body in place, commanding it. For a moment he almost fell to his knees under its pressure.

“You all will die if you keep running from me,” Vader said steadily. Then his voice became quieter, more insidious. “You will die, Luke.”

With one sharp motion Luke lunged toward the door. His body moved, but his head remained lowered—he couldn’t lift it. He curled in pain under the Force that screamed Obey me. Luke resisted.

“No, FATHER!” Luke shouted. He felt a white wave surround him, clashing with the darkness. “I won’t let you kill my friends.”

In the next moment Luke almost broke free of the grip. He rushed to the door and threw himself against it. But immediately he was pressed back by another wave.

Vader’s voice echoed in his head like a surge.

“I am coming for you, Luke, not for them.”

Luke collapsed by the door and stared into the empty space in front of him. He breathed heavily, not even trying to get up. He tilted his head back, trying to endure the wave. After a few moments, it receded.

But the burning fire inside him did not go away. His father’s voice had ignited something fierce within him that Luke could not stop.

“No!” he cried with all his strength. “You won’t catch me!”

Fighting his inner turmoil, Luke finally managed to unlock the door. He ran down the corridor as fast as he could, knocking supplies off tables. He burst into the cockpit and ordered the pilot to change course. In a state of disarray, he warned Leia and Han about what had happened, and together they decided to change course toward the cold planets.
