Lost this guy today. I know he was a lot of things to a lot of people. Actually, not always good. But he was always good and sweet to me.
And he was a great artist! People who know me know I wouldn’t say this lightly. His work was improvisation. He was a jazz artist in paint. He could make a lot of misguided junk but he painted so many, many marvels. His work was jazz at heart. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Mark my words, these marvels will be celebrated in a way Ed, sadly, will never see.
He sometimes frightened people because he could be tough and quick-to-anger. But he never scared me. He could let people down sometimes and be harsh. But you can never be frightened of someone who cared so much about doing something special in life and was so hard on himself trying to do it.
But Ed never let me down. He was never harsh to me. He supported me when I was a kid and he let me go gray and old without saying a word.
If we are really lucky, we may get to lose our parents more than once. It may sound somehow morbid in saying it, but if we are blessed to experience loss more than once, then it means we have loved more than once.
In the end and through it all, Ed was my buddy. I loved him. Goodbye you crusty, loveable, pain-in-the-ass, brilliant fuck!
