UFC needs to sign newly crowned Cage Warriors welterweight champion Karl Amoussou
Written by Nedu Obi
On Saturday night in the main event of Cage Warriors 80, which was held at the Indigo at The O2 Arena, London, England, Karl Amoussou captured the vacant 170-pound title via first-round TKO of Matt Inman. The âPsychoâ has been impressive in his last seven outings â dispatching all his foes â six in the opening stanza.
For a while now, Amoussou (24-7-2 MMA) has been quite vocal in stating he needs, and wants to be in the UFC, and as performances go, his championship bout with Inman as well as his seven finishes should be requisite enough for a multi-fight contract with the worldâs premier MMA promotion.
Amoussou, 31, does have solid mixed martial arts background haviâŠ
Hello and welcome to the 2nd Bellator installment of the Why It Matters series! The last time out, Bellator had a great show with superb ratings and a collection of highlight reel finishes. Will this time out be as good? Time will tell ultimately but it's not exactly the sparkling card of before. Still there's plenty to analyze and digest with a full five fight main card, a collection of tournament fights, Ben Askren and a prelim slate that may be more than meets the eye. I'm done shilling so...let's find out why it all matters.
Pre warning: Bellator's fight bout order changes, often times the day of the event. If a fight is bumped to the main card or shuffled to the undercard then I apologize for the order being out of place. They're still figuring this whole fight card business out. Thanks.
Javier Obrego (4-3) vs Hunter Tucker (4-0)
Why It Matters: Is Bellator about to grab onto a future star?
Hunter Tucker is a featherweight who was discovered through the Greg Jackson MMA shows in New Mexico. He's since latched onto Greg Jackson's and in under just two years worth of work has gone 4-0 and has been featured by both NOS and Sherdog as a prospect to watch. He's got some serious hype going and given his undefeated pedigree, Bellator has reason to be excited. He'll be making his debut against veteran Javier Obrego who is coming off a loss. This is a prime opportunity for Tucker to make a statement in his Bellator debut.
Zachary Church (1-1) vs Damon Jackson (3-0)
Why It Matters: A rematch from KOTC winds up in Bellator
So at first seeing this fight booked was a little odd. Mainly because when I looked up Damon Jackson's fight profile, I noticed he had already beaten Zach Church previously. The story goes the fight was really good and partially controversial with the finish. As such, both guys got their rematch! Even better, they got it on Bellator. Good for them. The question is who will make the most of the opportunity? Church is the one who lost the first fight and another loss drops him to below .500 on his record. A win for Jackson doesn't do him much good but I doubt he wants to lose a rematch against a guy he handled previously.
Chris Pham (2-0) vs Jason Sampson (9-1)
Why It Matters: Josh Sampson's Bellator Ascension
As much as I love Bellator's 145 lb class, I can say that their 135 lb class is not very good. Or rather, it's not anything to write home about. In a division that lacks a dominant #1 and seems to be struggling for some depth, Jason Campson could be a help to them. While this fight is at 140 lbs, Sampson is a natural BW who fought at 135 for Bellator in the past. If he beats the undefeated Pham, you'd have to assume he'll find a soft spot in the next BW tournament. It's all dependent of course on whether he can beat the undefeated, unknown Pham.
Cortez Coleman (8-3) vs Matt Jones (4-3)
Why It Matters: Fresh off a failure in TUF 16, can Coleman find a home in Bellator?
Cortez Coleman seems like a likable enough guy. He has a unique life story worth reading about and as a fighter, he's generally an entertaining sort of guy. That said, he couldn't stick in Strikeforce, failed in his shot to get into the UFC via the Ultimate Fighter and now is on the Bellator prelims in a gimme fight vs Matt Jones. It's in a better weight class for Coleman (185 lbs) and it's a fight he should in all likelihood win. That said, Coleman has had his opportunities before and not cashed in on them. Should he lose this fight, he may truly be out of options on the bigger stage.
Raul Amaya (10-1) vs Jose Gomes (32-8-1)
Why It Matters: Either a long time spot pro or an up and coming prospect will advance
This is the first of four Bellator WW tournament entrants and again, I cannot stress enough how badly this tournament misses Paul Daley and War Machine. Still the show must go on and what they do have here isn't exactly awful. This fight, the last of the Bellator prelims, features Raul Amaya and Brazilian Jose Gomes to determine who will advance to the semi finals. Gomes is a long time veteran of the sport who has been fighting since 2004 and has taken on the likes of Jacare Souza, Â Erick Silva, Daniel Acacio and Andre Santos. Raul Amaya is a 26 yr old prospect who is 1-1 in the Bellator cage including a loss to fellow WW tournament contestant Ben Saunders. Both guys are equal in skill level although far apart on the age and experience scale. Either Gomes will finally get his big break in the states with a win or Raul Amaya will try to regain his status as a solid prospect in Bellator with a win. He'd also earn a potential chance at redemption versus Killa B Saunders. It's a solid tournament fight with implications all around.

Brent Weedman vs Marius Zaromskis
Why It Matters: Among the tournament implications, one hype train is going to get a second chance at life.Â
When Alex LeBlanc first forced me to see a Bellator event, Â Brent Weedman was one of the first fights I saw. He looked very impressive and handled Jacob McClintock in the first round en route to a win. I was a fan instantly because he seemed like the sort of fighter I'd want to see more of. Since then, Weedman's career has been good moment followed by choke job in a big opportunity. He wrecked J.J. Ambrose with a unique Von Flue choke and then stubbed his toe vs Rick Hawn. On the other side of the marquee you have Marius Zaromiskis; an overnight sensation due to his Dream performance where he KO'd Jason High and Mach Sakurai. He's had mixed success in Bellator and was last seen being beaten half to death by Andrey Koreshkov. None the less, both of these guys have developed somewhat unwarranted hype trains but only one can advance. It doesn't take much to rebuild your support in MMA; a few nice wins can do a lot to repair your stock as a fighter (smiling at you, Rich Clementi). One guy is going to get the opportunity to rebuild that stock in the Bellator WW tournament while another will be going home after yet another disappointing performance.
Koffie Adzitso (18-9) vs Ben Saunders (14-5-2)
Why It Matters: It's getting close to nut cutting time for Ben Saunders.
Old saying I know but go with it because it's integral to the story. Bellator's Ben Saunders has remained one of those fighters that hardcore/finge MMA fans have clung to for a while now. Saunders is a very talented stand up fighter and by all accounts a nice guy outside of the cage. Cut by the UFC due to them feeling like he needed more seasoning, Saunders has found a home in Bellator where he's proven to be hit or miss for the most part. Expected to steamroll his first Bellator WW tournament, Saunders was beaten by the more well rounded Douglas Lima in the finals. Last year, Bryan Baker took him down and kept him there for three rounds in a decision loss. Saunders' inability to fight on the ground has long been a weakness of his and one that he has yet to really improve on. He'll get the chance against tough but beatable Koffi Adzitso. It's getting close to nut cutting time for Killa B as he has the talent to trouble just about anyone in Bellator's WW division. That said, he can only afford so many performances where his grappling is exposed as being weak before the hardcore fringe abandons him completely.
Douglas Lima (22-5) vs Michail Tsarev (24-3)
Why It Matters: Â Can Douglas Lima's explosive power catch Tsarev? Or will the Russian outgrapple him?
Douglas Lima is one of my favorite fighters due to his explosiveness, power and ties to my own guilty pleasure of MMA, Maximum Fighting Championships. Lima came to Bellator with a lot of hype and delivered on that for the most part outside of a poor performance versus Ben Askren. He'll get a chance to earn a second shot against Michael Tsarev who is coming off a TKO loss in the Bellator semi finals against Lyman Good. While Lima has the advantage standing, Tsarev has more submission victories and seems like a capable grappler. Lima, despite his sub chops, is much more comfortable standing and trading. Tsarev's hands are not very good but his top control seems pretty stellar. Lima is the favorite to win this fight (and the tournament) but Tsarev has the skills to make him uncomfortable. This one bears monitoring for an upset although I'll be pulling for Douglas Lima the entire time.
Mohammad Lawal (8-1-1) vs Przemyslaw Mysiala (16-7)
Why It Matters: As King Mo goes, so does Bellator.
King Mo was a big get for Bellator, even after he was busted for roids in Strikeforce. He has a polarizing persona, a lot of personality and flash and he's a good fighter. In Bellator's LHW scene (and perhaps in their entire organization), he is a star without even fighting. This match up is pretty much a get me over fight to advance Mo in the Bellator LHW tournament. Przemyslaw has been KO'd an astounding 6 times including by a welterweight Valentino Petrusco who competed on TUF Smashes. He's coming into this fight off a TKO loss and has never beaten a name opponent in his career. That said, as we saw last week with Babalu, crazy shit happens in MMA. The stakes are higher here though. If Mo loses, Bellator will in all likelihood take a massive hit. He's been built up as their superstar and should he lose, be it by decision or otherwise, the company will take a serious hit. They have all their eggs in one basket. Luckily for them, Mysliala doesn't look like the guy to break em.
Ben Askren (10-0) vs Karl Amoussou (16-4-2)
Why It Matters: Testing patience versus winning
Bellator 85 was a great event that featured some flashy KOs and a geniunely entertaining FW title fight. Bellator 86 and 87 will test the staying power of Bellator because in all likelihood, Ben Askren is going to test them. Askren is a tremendous wrestler and quote. The problem is? He's far from entertaining. He's not for everyone to put it mildly. His fight vs Karl Amoussou will test the patience of new fans unless something has clicked in Askren to awaken his killer instinct. Assuming that's not going to happen, it'll be up to Karl Amoussou to make this fight entertaining. Amoussou isn't a great fighter by any stretch but he's hot right now and is riding a four fight winning streak. He can test Askren but I think most of us feel like this is an easy win for Askren. In truth, it's less about who wins and more about the fight right now. Your typical Ben Askren type performance could hurt Bellator in the long run while a dominant and flashy win by Funky Ben could help propel him to stardom. It's all in how you look at it.Â
