“I never know what to make of people anymore.” She starts, gently pulling yellowed and dried leaves from the fern she’s been tending to. “I had always grown up and been taught that your community was everything. We were all meant to be family. And then I was introduced to the so-called civilized world and...” Her head shakes, looking less upset about the cruelty of mankind and more sorrowful. “It just seems a shame that progress brought out the worst in people.”

“Glad I can help.” He brings his drink up to his lips, the rim of the glass hiding the amused twitch of his lips. By the time it finds the table again, he’s back to his usual brooding, stoic, and unreadable demeanor. 

He’s used to being the one dishing out the sarcasm and teasing, though being on the receiving end is nothing new for him either. He takes it in stride, dishing it back just as quickly. Something in her statement stays ringing in his ears. 

                ❝    𝗜 𝗧𝗢𝗟𝗗 𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗦 𝗚𝗘𝗧𝗧𝗜𝗡’ 𝗢𝗨𝗧 𝗪𝗢𝗨𝗟𝗗𝗡’𝗧 𝗕𝗘 𝗘𝗔𝗦𝗬.     ❞        he was lucky to say the least,  it only took a good beating for his family to be okay with his walking away from the life    —    for him to keep a hold of the things that mattered to him    ( his restaurant mostly,  he’d put too much work into it to just walk away ).        𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗟𝗟,  some didn’t have people around them that were so understanding that were so willing to let go ;    letting green hues rest on her though he offers the faintest of smiles before speaking again,        ❝    𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗦 𝗖𝗔𝗡 𝗖𝗥𝗔𝗦𝗛 𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗚𝗛.    i might not be in anymore but my family still looks out for me so it should be safe for a couple of days at least.    ❞
