Avengers Vs. X-Men: Consequences #2 October 17, 2012
One of my biggest pet peeves irl is when I’m making fun of men’s code for dating (like cliché pick up lines, or the way they genuinely think it’s brave to go harrass a girl into giving them their phone number, and so on) and the first thing that people always tell me is “Wait till you fall in love. You make fun of them now but you’ll even let him cat call you if he’s the love of your life”. FIRST AND FOREMOST, why do you assume that the love of my life is gonna be a guy? I’m ace, Marisol, I’ve got no interest in any gender but that also means I don’t prefer one over another. If I truly fall in love one day it doesn’t have to be a guy.
Second, even if I end up falling for a guy, why am I not allowed to have my own personality? Why should I have to be okay with the damn guy cat calling me or treating me as less than the person I am. I’m not a babe, I’m me and I have my name. And it irks me that people think I can’t be sure of who I am because falling in love means letting go of what you know of yourself. No. I don’t like cheesy poems now, I won’t like them then. I don’t like crossing-the-line flirting now, I won’t like it then. Third, if a person is gonna be the love of my life, regardless of their gender, they’ll accept me and respect me, period.
The answer I usually get is, “Then you’ll stay alone forever!”
So? In case you haven’t noticed, I’m absolutely FINE being alone. But this also seems to imply that wanting to be treated like a person is asking too much. I guess it is when it comes to guys.
