“Are we there yet?”

“Almost Clara! Watch your step there…yes…alright, now sit.”

She smiled and out of curiosity she obeyed, realizing that he had laid a picnic blanket on the grass.

She opened her eyes and saw that they were on top of a hill overlooking the Thames River in London. It was night, and she could hear the crickets chirping.

The Doctor took her hand and smiled half-heartedly. “It’s nothing new…but you know… Clara, my Clara…my time as the Doctor is almost done. I can tell…I’m going to regenerate soon. Maybe sooner than I think. Anyway, it’s almost Christmas, and I wanted to do something special for you. Not that you’ve never seen them before because I know they are quite common in London so you have undoubtedly seen them numerous times but…After my last two companions…left, I was secluded, cut off from the world…lonely. You found me in that cloud in the sky (not that you remember actually, because that was before you died)…”

Clara looked quizzically at him and opened her mouth to speak, but he continued before she could get a word in.

“You made me happy again, Clara. And since you’ve seen my time stream I know that you know what I’m talking about, but as myself right now I wanted to have a pleasant moment with you before I change.”

She smiled and squeezed his hand. “You will always be my Doctor, no matter what face you have.”

They were in perfect sync. They both leaned in slowly, carefully, before their lips touched. The Doctor pulled her closer as they kissed, never wanting to let her go. He was so grateful for her: someone who understood him and his way of life. He could only imagine what he would be doing right now if he hadn’t met her. Suddenly, they heard a boom and they broke apart. Clara laughed and the Doctor smiled knowingly, as this was his plan all along. Bright fireworks erupted just about a kilometer away. Clara and the Doctor laid down on the blanket, the Doctor’s arm protectively around her shoulders, as they watched the fireworks.

“This was wonderful, Doctor. Thank you.”
