Apparently EPYC’s increasing popularity has changed Dell’s mind as well. Although Last year Dell CTO John Roese notoriously said the company did not expect the server market to become a “duopoly” with the arrival of AMD’s EPYC server chips, claiming the new chips wouldn’t change Dell’s portfolio in a “meaningful way,” Now it is changing.

In a recent interview with Itpro.co.uk, Dell representative Dominque Vanhamme said Dell expects to triple its EPYC server offerings by the end of the year. The company will also launch new servers based on AMD’s 7nm EPYC Rome processors. Tomhardware reports.

Aside from 7nm Rome‘s promise of a beastly 64-cores and 128-threads in a single package, the new chips will also prove that AMD can deliver on its roadmaps. That’s the real win in the eyes of data center customers because it signals that the expensive qualification process won’t amount to a one-off expense. Dell also plans to expand its current lineup of Naples-powered servers, too. Vanhamme, Dell’s EMEA Vice President and General Manager, said the company plans to triple the number of EPYC servers it offers, currently numbered at three, by the end of the year. Even with the possibility of nine servers in Dell’s armada, that still pales in comparison to Intel’s 50 SKUs, highlighting that AMD will still face challenges.

Amazon Web Services this just started to offer M5ad and R5ad Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) instances powered by custom AMD EPYC 7000-series processors and featuring faster local storage. The new M5ad and R5ad instances are available in the US East (N. Virginia), US West (Oregon), US East (Ohio), and Asia Pacific (Singapore) Regions in various forms.

  The new AMD EPYC-powered servers for M5ad and R5ad instances offer high-performance, low latency local NVMe storage subsystems that support XTS-AES-256 block cipher in hardware to ensure data protection. The key to protect a data for a specific instance is deleted when the instance is stopped or terminated. Amazon offers M5ad instances in six sizes with up to 96 vCPUs, up to 768 GB of memory, and up to 3.6 TB of NVMe storage. The AWS R5ad are aimed at more demanding memory-intensive workloads, such as in-memory analytics, data mining, caching, simulations, etc. The company offers them in six versions featuring up to 96 vCPUs, up to 768 GB of memory, and up to 3.6 TB of NVMe storage. The new M5ad and R5ad instances are available in the US East (N. One pre-production AMD EPYC™ “Rome” server processor outperforms two of the competitor’s best processors on the C-Ray raytracing benchmark.

AMD EPYC ‘Rome’ processor will carry multiple CPU chiplets manufactured using TSMC’s 7 nm fabrication process as well as an I/O die produced at a 14 nm node. As it appears, high-performance ‘Rome’ processors will use eight CPU chiplets offering 64 x86 cores in total, as well as an eight-channel DDR4 memory controller supporting up to 4 TB of DRAM per socket. Another monster CPU from AMD, 64 core version of AMD’s next-generation 7nm based EPYC Rome server processor benchmark which was posted at Chiphell forums is presumably from a next-gen 7 nm. It is going to be out in 2019 for datacenters and shows us the incredible multi-tasking CPU performance which the new lineup would have.

AMD engineering sample which is about the same size and dimensions as the current EPYC ‘Naples’ series of processors. The codename and ID have been blocked. The CPU was tested in Cinebench R15 multi-thread benchmark and scored an astonishing 12,587 points which are beyond anything current-generation processors can achieve. At Computex 2018, AMD announced that they are sampling the second generation, 7nm based EPYC ‘Rome’ processors in 2H 2018. AMD’s CEO, Lisa Su, even held a 7nm EPYC processor in her hands, showcasing it to the audience.

AMD’s 2019 CPU family is designed to tackle the Intel 10nm Ice Lake Xeons favorably and things are looking really good for AMD as their Rome CPU family will only be competing against Intel’s 14nm++ server refreshed family, aka Cascade Lake-SP. Intel’s Ice Lake-SP processors based on 10nm process aren’t expected to arrive in the server Xeon space till 2020.

AMD Is All In For AI Market In 2018

AMD’s CPU & GPU revenue comes from its CPUs and GPUs sales that surged 54% annually last year and accounted for 57% of the chipmaker’s top line. That growth pattern continued into the first quarter of 2018, fueled by robust demand for its Zen-based CPUs. Its total revenues from China rose 58% last year and accounted for a third of its top line. AMD’s Ryzen CPUs are reportedly gaining ground in desktops, but struggling in the notebook market, where many OEMs remain partnered with Intel. AMD now is supporting the growth of a “clone army” in China that couldactually dent Intel’s strongest market.

Chinese chipmaker Hygon recently launched Dhyana, a high-performance x86 CPU designed for Chinese data centers. That move was surprising but Hygon’s Dhyana isn’t built on some Chinese technological breakthrough, it’s based on the same technology as AMD’s Epyc CPUs. Hygon produced the clone with AMD’s blessing through a complex web of partnerships and licensing agreements. AMD did this and it could hurt Intel’s data center business. China still buys plenty of CPUs from Intel since its Xeons are still considered the “best in breed” processors for data centers, but US regulators banned Intel from selling its top chips to China’s supercomputer centers in 2015

AMD established two joint ventures with Chinese holding company THATIC — one with Chengdu Haiguang Microelectronics Technology (CHMT), and another with Haiguang IC Design, also known as Hygon. AMD owns a majority stake in CHMT, which ensures that its IP isn’t transferred to THATIC. THATIC owns a majority stake in Hygon, which licenses AMD’s IP from CHMT. Hygon designs the chips, and CHMT produces the chips through a suitable foundry and then sends them back to Hygon for packaging, marketing, and sales.

AMD’s Epyc arrived only a year ago, but it’s already causing headaches for Intel. Benchmarks found that it could outperform comparable Intel CPUs in certain high-performance computing and big data applications that require CPU cores to operate independently. Many big companies, including Microsoft and Baidu, started installing AMD’s cheaper chips in their data centers.
