In this meme, I am referencing Guy Debord’s “The Society and the Spectacle.” The ‘hard to swallow pills’ meme formant acknowledges that many people have difficulty accepting how capitalism is structured to oppress the working class, but it is something that we all need to acknowledge.

Détournement Meme: This meme was my détournement meme and I used Donald Trump’s and Bill Clinton’s Presidential Inauguration pictures. Here, I photoshopped Jeffery Epstein’s face into the picture because of their ties of being part of this trafficker’s global network of powerful men taking advantage of young girls. I tagged the meme with the slogan “All Great Men Think Alike” and subverted the meaning to become sarcastic to allude to the fact that many powerful men in politics had ties with Epstein.

For this gif I wanted to use the commonly known image of Marilyn Monroe’s dress going up. I surrounded her image with images of the Korean War which took place during the same time period as Marilyn Monroe’s popularity. I wanted to show how the media distracts us from the terrible things that are going on around us through sexuality and popularity. 

This is my Class Content meme. I made this meme to reflect the disinterested view of art in a humorous way. I find it an interesting concept that art should be beautiful in order to be art, especially as we review memes to be a form of art. I was inspired by the project itself in my execution of this meme and though it took a bit of a steep learning curve with Photoshop I enjoyed completing this section of the project.

The gif starts with Trump at one of his speeches and a sign welcoming people to America is overlaid. Next, a moment from one of Trumps rallies where a person was thrown out while Trump is telling his supporters to beat that person up is re-purposed to suggest that that it is directed towards foreigners. Finally, a flag with the quote “God bless America” finishes the gif off to poke fun at the idea that the United States is the best country in the world. (Final Image isnt shown in preview)

This meme uses the base template of Fancy Winnie the pooh to portray an idea from John Berger’s “Ways Of Seeing” where companies are able to steal a person’s identity via advertisements to make a person feel lacking and then use that sense of need to sell products.

This meme uses the base template of a scene from The Simpsons (An old TV show/cartoon) where a character knows hes in danger and is panicking (on the inside) right before disaster happens. This plays off of the social issues of COVID-19 where suddenly, any cough/sneeze/etc is seen as a potential infection case but because its not confirmed, people still act “normal” around that person. 

This meme shows Rick from “Rick and Morty” pulling up the wallpaper to expose something behind it. There has been a lot of controversy about public figures, including President Trump, using language like “Chinese virus” to describe the Coronavirus. Some people don’t find this kind of phrasing dangerous or harmful to Asian American’s despite increasing numbers of racially motivated attacks against Asian Americans.
