Mellotone Beer Project Big Red Tempo Mexican Lager on tap at Mita's in Cincinnati, OH. A 3 of 4. A nice lager with some caramel and nutty malt notes and some faint fruitiness. Very light body, as expected, and very easy-drinking. Not going to blow you away, but pairs well with the food.

Even though it is still winter and there will snow tomorrow, I still grilled burgers, potatoes, and broccoli. What brew goes best with that kind of "pretend it is summer" meal? An American-Style Amber Larger, of course! I chose Steam Engine Lager by Steamworks out of Durango. I have had it before and it is clear why it is a multiple Gold Medal winner at the GABF. It is flavorful with a nice malty backbone and a perfect pairing with a robust meal.

Oskar Blues Beerito Amber Mexican Lager (Picked up at Target). A 3 of 4. Some nice caramel malt and toasty notes in the body of this easy-drinking lager. A nice medium body and relatively high carbonation, and some faint grassy/herbal notes in the background.
Peroni Gran Riserva Rossa (Picked up at an Iperal in Italy). A 2 of 4. Not nearly as rich as I was expecting -- the caramel malt qualities are a bit subdued and this is a bit thin. Some nice fruity qualities in the body and drinks rather cleanly with a slightly sweet finish. A very standard amber lager.

Ok, back to basics. If you haven’t tasted this beer yet, there might be something seriously wrong with you. When it comes to stepping stones into the world of craft, I feel like this should be one of the first because it is offered in just about every restaurant and most people have probably tasted it at a party or get together without even realizing it. This is probably Brooklyn’s worst beer which says a lot for the brewery and the caliber it operates at because it is still a great offering. This has a caramel sweetness to start before some mildly bitter floral hop flavor mixes before ending with a mix of malty sweetness and bitterness. I’m going to keep this one short but basically, if you want to get into craft beer but haven’t found a good entry point yet, you just did. This beer is the perfect solution to ween you off of big beer due to it’s familiar flavors while still giving you enough depth to get you hooked so make sure you pick up a sixer and start on your quest. For the pros out there, you’ve probably already had this so basically this review was pointless for you to read but now that you have I can tell you that you just wasted 3 minutes of your life that you’ll never get back…fuckers.
