Posting what I have of my third and hopefully last revamp of Merlin and Charlie’s first meeting!
Charlie:
Being hungry wakes him up. Mama isn’t with him, but that makes sense. He looks around, sniffing the air like she does before she leaves. He doesn’t smell anything funny, so he stands up, stretching. He walks into the bigger part of their cave, hoping she won’t be mad. He follows her scent, finding Papa’s too. Soon he sees them sitting, their backs turned to him. He opens his mouth to call them, but he closes it when Mama starts talking. “He isn’t going to survive much longer.” Her voice is the same. Papa doesn’t answer. Who is she talking about? He wonders. He wants to ask, but she’d get mad if he interrupted. “We could just have another kit eventually. Hopefully, that one will be stronger.” Oh. She’s talking about… him? Papa hums. “I’m sure he would’ve been the runt if we had litters.” His heart hurts. Why is she being so mean? Why is Papa acting like it’s true? He isn’t going to die. He’s fifty-five! He’s big and strong! They become quiet, looking at each other. He stays where he is, keeping his head bowed. His tail nervously sways behind him. Mama, please. Don’t leave me. He should go. They’ll get mad if they knew he heard. He quietly heads back to his nest, laying his head on his paws. It takes ages before he hears theirs. He shuts his eyes, acting like he’s asleep until they come closer. Breath on his head makes him open his eyes. He looks up at them, trying not to be scared. Will they stop being so mean? “Mama?” He whispers, laying flatter at the look in her eyes. “I’m hungry.” “Are you?” She still has the same tone. “You’re always such a burden.” “I know, Mama.” He tucks his wings closer, making himself smaller before he looks away. “Well?” She asks, scaring him. “Don’t just sit there. Come here.” “Sorry, Mama.” She picks him up by his scruff when he does. He can’t move as she walks to the front of their cave. She spreads her wings, and he calms down. They said those mean things, but she’s still taking him with her while she goes hunting! Papa follows them like always. The wind blows through his fur, and he thinks of being able to fly whenever he wants. He can’t wait to do it with them someday. It takes ages before they both land somewhere, but he was patient! They shouldn’t be mad! Maybe they’re getting a new type of prey. She walks over to some bushes, lowering her head to set him down under them. “Stay quiet,” she says. “I will, Mama.” She nuzzles his cheek, and he slowly begins to purr as she walks away. She… she nuzzled him! Even though he’s a burden! He watches happily as they fly off, two gusts of wind all that’s there. …Oh. They’re going back to their usual hunting place after all. They’ll be back soon, though. He stays still and quiet. A bird starts chirping above him, no longer scared. He wants to see it, but Mama being mad makes him stay. He isn’t sleepy at all, so he looks around the bush. Green, green, and the brown of the branches. Soon he’s bored. He sighs, laying his head on his paws again. They’re taking ages. Mama, Papa, where are you? Time keeps passing. And passing. And passing. It’s dark now. What if they didn’t change their minds? What if they… left him here? No, they wouldn’t do that! They still love him, even though he’s a burden! He just has to be patient. They’ll be back with food soon. He jumps at a new sound. He tilts his head when it keeps going, listening. Cheep. Cheep.
They must be a different kind of bird that only comes out when it’s dark. They sound closer to the ground. Would he be able to look at them now without Mama getting mad? He slowly crawls out, looking around. He smells the air, happy when he doesn’t smell anything funny. But he doesn’t smell Mama and Papa either. “Mama?” He says softly. “Mama, are you here?” The night birds stop. “Mama, don’t be mad. I’m sorry. You were taking ages.” She doesn’t answer. “Mama!” He yells. “Mama, where are you?” A new scent suddenly enters his nose, and he turns, scared. A monster slowly comes out from behind a tree, eyes on him. He stares at it, scared. It doesn’t have fur at all. Brown things grow from its head, past what he can see from the front of it. They fall around its blue eyes, but they’re a different blue than Mama’s. They have orange around them too. Two silver treasures he’s seen in their cave hang below funny things that are on both sides of its head. One of the soft things in their cave Mama called “clothes” is wrapped around its body, covering most of the monster. It’s yellow, not green. It isn’t covered in blood either. Besides its eyes and brown things, the rest of it is a lighter brown all across its body. Is it the monster Mama said would get him if he was bad? He didn’t mean to! They’d just been gone for so long! He backs up when it starts coming closer, whimpering. “Go- go away,” he whispers. It stops, raising its front legs. “I’m not going to hurt you,” it- she- says softly. He stares at her, freezing in surprise. She’s not a monster? She can talk like him? “What are you?” He asks, looking away because Mama says it’s rude to stare. He doesn’t want to be. “I’m a human,” she murmurs, making him look back. “You haven’t seen one before?” She bares her teeth, but… she doesn’t seem mad? He’s so confused, but he nods. “What’s that?” “It’s what I am. What are you?” “I’m a dragon!” He says proudly, and she bares her teeth even more. “How old are you?” She slowly makes herself smaller, her legs bending in a strange way from what he can see under her clothes. He backs away a little, but she still doesn’t seem mad. It’s… weird, but she’ll be mad soon. He’s sure of it. “Fifty-five,” he answers slowly. “How old is that in dragon years?” He tries to think. “Um… Mama says we age one year every twenty-six. I think I’m… two?” She hums, face darkening. It’s because of him, isn’t it?
“And where are your parents?” “Mama and Papa went hunting!” He says happily. “…They’ve been gone for ages,” he whispers, sadness coming back. “But- but they should be back soon!” She looks at him, face something he doesn’t like. “Why don’t you tell me what happened?” “I woke up because I was hungry. Mama wasn’t there, so I tried to find her. And I did! I was hoping she wouldn’t be mad, but she started talking to Papa before I could say anything. “She said… I’m not going to survive much longer. But that’s not true! I’m big and strong! And that she and Papa could just… have another kit eventually. And- and Papa agreed. He said I’d be the runt of dragons had litters. Then they got quiet and looked at each other. I didn’t want them to get mad because I heard, so I went back to my nest and pretended to be asleep until they came back. “I opened my eyes when they breathed on my head. Mama… looked mad, and I was scared. When I told her I was hungry, she got mad, but she still took me with them when they went hunting! It seemed like ages before they landed here, but I was patient! This isn’t where we usually go, so I thought they were getting a new type of prey. “Mama put me under some bushes like she always does, telling me to stay quiet. I said I would, and she nuzzled me before she left! She never does that, so I was really happy. Then they flew off. I guess to go back to their usual spot? I stayed still and quiet, even when I heard some birds! I didn’t want Mama to get mad. I wasn’t sleepy at all, so I got bored really fast. “And time kept passing. And passing and passing. It was dark out like now. I heard the night birds chirping, and I wanted to see them, so I crawled out. I hoped Mama wouldn’t be mad since I’d stayed quiet for so long. I smelled the air, but I didn’t smell them. I started calling for her, but- but she didn’t answer. The night birds stopped chirping, and I couldn’t hear anything else besides me. Then I smelled a new scent, and I got scared, but it was just you. “I thought you were a monster,” he whispers, ashamed. “I’m sorry. I didn’t know.” He lowers his head, tail swishing behind him because he can’t stop it. “No, it’s all right,” she says after a moment of silence and looking at him. “How were you supposed to know that I wasn’t?” “Um… I don’t know.” Why is she still being so nice? Why didn’t she get mad? “See? That’s why you shouldn’t be sorry. It’s good to be cautious of something you haven’t seen before.” He stares at her. She stares back at him before slightly baring her teeth again. “Are you still hungry?” He nods slowly. This is how she’ll get mad. It has to be. She sighs, and he waits for her anger. “That makes sense. I’m sorry. That should have been the first thing I asked.” What? “You… aren’t mad?” “Of course not,” she says. “You aren’t going to call me a burden?” “Why would I do that?” She asks, seeming confused. “It’s- it’s what Mama does.” “When you’re hungry?” She asks, angry, and there it is. Finally. But- but it seems like it’s at Mama, not him.
