Altered Earth: The Intorduction
Altered Earth is a Tabletop RPG that is currently being developed by my brother and I, with an intent to go to publication within the year. I will post updates to the development cycle here on my blog as well as spotlights on aspects of the game.
Here is a short introduction to the world and concepts of Altered Earth.
Throughout all of human history there have been Alters hiding within the crowds of humans, never enough to gain widespread knowledge of their existence. Alters were merely part of the many myths of human cultures and can be attributed to many feets of wonder and spectacle. The lives of many of Alters during these times were short and dangerous as they wrestled with their new "Alterfications" and the humans who feared them. Many were killed outright or by their own powers that could betray them at any moment.
With the onset of the Industrial Revolution human populations of Earth sharply increased, this too lead to the rise in number of Alters. As magic became science, the wealthy industrialist of the era did not look upon the Alters as something to fear but as opportunity and investment. With the powers of Alters behind them these Barons of Industry made great technological leaps, and provided protection to the Alters who joined them. This was the first time in history that Alters were able to organize and have extended interactions with others of their kind.
Nations prospered with Alters fueling their innovation, and the first Archetypes were discovered as those who studied Alters noticed repeating patterns of Alter powers. These same nations came together in agreement to shield the public from the existence of Alters, and many of the Alters agreed to help maintain the peace. However, this relative peace would not last as the nations of Europe marched once again to war with their new machines and weapons. It wasn't long before one side or another pushed their Alters onto the battlefield.
For the first time Alters were trained to harness their powers for combat, and over the decades between both of the Great Wars of Europe the 12 Archetypes were discovered and refined. BY the time the second Great War broke out the Alter forces for both sides were highly trained for warfare. Much devastation was created by a handful of Alters on both sides, and the Church emerged from the ashes with their secret Host of Alters. Disappointed with the nations of the war, the Church used its Holy Host to hunt down and kill every Alter on either side of the war. With the war drawing to a close both The United Nations and The USSR agreed together to reign in their Alter use. However, each side used an escalation of Alters in their Cold War Strategy, bringing rise to The Authority.
The Authority was the United Nations sanctioned Altered program, whose purpose was to capture or kill as many new Alters as they could find to keep them away from the Russians. After a few years of killing their own kind, a core group of Alters within the Authority decided to flee and go into hiding. These Alters ran to the American Midwest, far from major population centers, to hide from the Authority in Europe.
These Original Alters banded together to form The Guild, to seek out a place of sanctuary for all Alters to live safely and free of fear. These Alters of different Archetypes formed into Factions within the guild to divide up the work that is necessary to keep The Guild progressing towards their goal.
Players will choose an Archetype for their power and skill set, and a Faction to decide their loyalties and identity. Archetypes are meant to compliment a player's play style where a Faction should be what dictates a player's play style. However, no Archetype is limited to any Faction and it the player is encouraged to join which ever Faction the feel suits them. Altered Earth will have a focus on character development and player narratives will be a focus of the game play.
