McFly July Day 15: George and His Cereal
started working on the idea i had preemptively come up with, tried for several hours to write it, decided I hated it, rewrote the whole thing, and ended up with this. enjoy!
Most days, breakfast at the McFly's was an elaborate affair. Lorraine would cook and George would (try to) help. David, Linda, and Marty would come when they were called and, for a moment, the family would come together before scattering to their various activities.
Of course, this wasn't always feasible. Today, for example, Lorraine and Linda had left town on a 'girl's trip', leaving the men to fend for themselves. This resulted in meals comprised mainly of sandwiches, leftovers, take-out, or cereal.
Honestly? George had cereal so rarely that when he did, it felt like a treat. Sort of. Something about it feels familiar, he frowned, even monotonous- like I have it every day.
It was probably just left over from when he was a kid, he decided, shrugging it off. They did get the same brand.
"Good morning, son." His youngest had just stumbled down the stairs and was starting at him, mouth agape. "Is something wrong?"
Marty blinked rapidly and shook his head. "No-uh, sorry, I just thought I saw- it, uh, just reminded me of something."
"Alright...do you want some cereal? Your mother's in Pacifica with your sister, so-"
The doorbell rang, making them both jump.
"Shoot, dad, I'm sorry- Lizzy's here already, we're doing a history project and we've got to finish it before class."
"No worries. Don't keep your friend waiting." George leaned on the wall as his son yanked the front door open.
"Hey, Lizzy, uh, just give me a second and-"
"You literally just got up, didn't you." It wasn't a question. "Did you even eat breakfast?"
"Uh..."
"Go eat," she ordered, shoving him back inside. "We've got time. I got here early 'cause I knew this would happen."
Chuckling, George watched Lizzy usher Marty into his own kitchen. "Hello, Lizzy. How's your mother?"
"Oh!" He hadn't been hiding, but she jumped like she'd just noticed him. "Hello, Mr. McFly. She's, uh, she's good! Still living in, uh, Boston."
"I've told you before, you can call me George." After all, her mother- the original Lizzy- had been his only friend for quite a few years. "Does she see Calvin at all?"
Lizzy glanced over at Marty and a small smile spread across her face. "Yeah, a little. I mean, she doesn't really mention him, but they still live in the same area, so probably."
"Well, if you talk to them, tell them I said hi."
"Okay, all done. Let's go," Marty announced, grabbing Lizzy by the wrist and pulling her towards the door.
"I will," she grinned. "See you around, George."
