Knowing and understanding proper portion control can be a struggle for us all. Knowing how much to take and what to eat can be tough; but there are some healthy tips and tricks to really understanding how much to take in and what to eat during a meal.
Know the proper serving size. Okay, yes, this seems repetitive. But so many of us don't understand the correct portion size for the food we're eating. Most foods have a different portion size- meats, vegetables etc. The best thing to do is to cook the foods so you aren't accidentally overeating; or understand what an estimated serving size is so when you eat out, you can stop yourself from finishing an entire plate. Usually, of example, a piece of red meat should only be about the size of a deck of cards.
Use veggies to load up your plate. We see a big plate, with lots of empty spaces, and 9 times out of 10 we will go back for seconds. If you fill it up to begin, you will find yourself filling up faster. Don't add extra potatoes though- try going green. Add extra beans to fill it out; or steam up some broccoli!
Turn off the TV! Don't distract yourself while eating. Focus on what's going into your mouth and when you feel full. Don't allow yourself to mindlessly snack while you eat things you don't need. Your body needs energy, not a full belly. Stop when you don't need to eat anymore, allow yourself time to digest. If your adding a salad or veggies with lots of protein, you will feel satisfied longer.
Never eat from the box. This is key for snacking. If you eat from the box, or bag, you forget how much you've put in your mouth and keep eating when you have already finished the correct serving. Servings are there so you can monitor your nutritional intake- take a look at what you're getting.
Leave the serving dishes in the kitchen. OR put away the extras right away. Don't allow yourself to go back for seconds. You know how much you should be eating and what will get your feeling satisfied. Give yourself time to digest and save some for lunch tomorrow!
