My thoughts on the book Alpha Rising by Quinn Loftis. Book 12 in The Grey Wolves Series.
//spoilers and a rant ahead//
I love the series so hear me out. When I first started reading, when there was only the first three books I remember before any of the Gypsy Healer books, and I fell in love with the witty, down to earth characters, the werewolf lore, the trials, missteps and successes....but somewhere along the way this series lost the original magic it held.
About half way in the series character became caricatures of themselves. A main grievous I have is that Jacque the main character of the first books isn’t the main focus anymore which is fine as the story evolves to more perspectives however it feels like she been left in the dust but dragged along cause she /important/ to the plot especially in the last few books.
For instance in this book Jen outright dismissed the chance to talk to her while they were captured when they could have used their mates like walkie-talkies.
Aside from being sidelined, it also has the problem of too many characters to keep track being introduced.
Which includes the kids! Timeline wise the main three are barely out of high school. Story wise it would have done fine without them. Thus now besides being literally soul-connected to another person without any time to learn how to live on their own they have children. Also not to mention one of the two girls recently free from being trapped in a torture dungeon for their entire childhood is pregnant, but its okay cause their 18 /sarcastic/. Like girl therapy before sex.
Jacque being sideline in the last few books also makes the big twist of this book feel unearned. Jacque barely had any screen time and all of a sudden she the queen of every supernatural being of all races. Like, please be the leader of your own pack first before you are put in charges of thousands. Or quite literally the entire world. And I’m not to happy with the sequel baiting either.
Then much like all shows that go on too long with more and “greater” villains that keep coming out the the woodstock the story starts to feel bloated leaving the sinking feeling that it should have ended already instead of being drawn out. (Which I believe Quinn said herself that it was suppose to end around the 7th book but keep it going, which good for her but also the story maybe suffering now.)
The main thing I’m turn off is the continuing intervention of the Great Luna ex-machina a lot lately. (The biggest offense in the gypsy healer series, when she literally won the battle for them) Then not to mention the forced ‘god’ is the one and only savior and you must heel under their will.
Now I will always return to read the next book as I’m holy invested in how it turns out but I lost the initial love I had for it.
