Joel in “Almost Live!: The Show that Wouldn’t Die”
“I met Joel on a movie set when he was still at the UW and I recommended him for an intern position. He was an extremely polite and effective intern and became a great cast member. Things were written for him that played up his leading man good looks but he had a line that he refused to cross. He didn’t like to participate in sketches that hinted at sexual situations. I’m talking about very tame stuff here but he was a real church-going young man. We used to say he’d never make it in Hollywood if he stuck to those views. Guess we were wrong about that. I remember him as a happy, nice, athletic young man who displayed none of the snark that seems to define his presence on TV today.” --- John Keister
“He is not just a good actor, a funny guy and all of that stuff, but he is also a really great human being. I started getting these letters at the radio station, and at first they seemed kind of charming...slowly over time his letters started getting dark, and creepier...and so I’m reading about all this stuff because he is actually threatening to kill me. Joel said, ‘You have to take this to the police.’ I said, ‘No, I’m not that worried about it.’ He said, ‘You should be.’ ... And so Joel decided he was going to just drive down to the guy...Joel drives down there, he pulled up at the house and he sits and does surveillance of this guy who is living with his parents as it turns out...and Joel really watches him and decided he is no big threat. But I mean, he just did that independently.” --- Pat Cashman
“I knew that he was charming, he immediately makes you feel like he’s your big brother.” --- Lauren Weedman
“It was the time of my life. I loved being on the show, I loved that time, it was great to be in Seattle. All those things I got to be a part of. I just felt so blessed” --- Joel McHale

this is from the show “almost live!” that aired on local tv in the 90s so this is obviously dated but as a washingtonian it’s still funny to me ok
p.s. that’s bill nye as “the alert boeing worker”
p.p.s. today this sketch would 100% be about gentrification 😬
