I Wish You were the One
āYou have GOT to be kidding me, Dean!ā Sam grumbled āseriously, you havenāt seen Cas in two months!ā
āWhatās your point, Sam?ā Dean asked, peeved. If his brother could mind his own businessā¦ā¦.
āMy point is, the guy probably thinks you hate him.ā Sam replied, knowing he was pushing Deans buttons. He knew Dean wasnāt fully to terms with his own sexuality, but this was SAM for Peteās sake! Their dad was out of the picture, and it was just the two of them living together now. Dean should very well know that Sam wouldnāt be judgmental in the least!
Would be hypocritical to do so, given his own preferences, but still!
āCome on.ā Sam clapped a hand on Deans shoulder, giving it a squeeze āthe guy is crazy about you. Iām sure heād be willing to take things slow so you would be comfortable.ā
Dean was a retired sailor, Sam an airman. They had both signed up in order to escape a less-than-desirable home life, and were now adjusting to civilian life together. Not too long after getting their apartment, theyād met the Novak brothers, Castiel and Gabriel.
Sam was still unsure as to how they could possibly be related. They looked nothing alike!
Gabriel owned a coffee shop, Castiel worked the book shop next door. Dean and Castiel, both perpetually quiet creatures, had hit it off rather well. Sam and Gabriel had become friends, too. Just friends, though. Gabriel wasnāt judgmental, given his own brothers preferences, but he was as straight as a board. Sam was okay with that.
Dean and Castiel were taking things slow, though. āSlow as molasses in winterā would be the way Gabriel described them.
Sam knew it was hard for Dean to deal with this. Their dad hadnāt exactly been the most open minded or accepting, raising them in a hyper-masculine household ever since their mom died when they were kids. Sam had gone to college before enlisting, so he was ābetterā about it, but Dean had gone into the service right out of high school. Heād gone for ten years active duty, Sam for six, so they hadnāt seen each other properly in ages.
~
āAre they arguing AGAIN?ā Gabriel asked, handing Sam a warm cup of hot chocolate. Sam and Dean had gone to visit Gabe and Cas, and Castiel had immediately gone into it with Dean, arguing about their ārelationshipā.
āYeah,ā Sam scoffed āI donāt know whatās worse. When they shout at each other, or when itās quiet like this.ā
āGiven how loud your brother is, and how quiet mine is, Iām not sure, eitherā¦ā Gabriel agreed, both of them jumping when they heard Dean shout.
āDAMN IT, CAS!ā Deans voice was ragged, worn down āI CANāT DEAL WITH THIS!ā
āDeal with WHAT, Dean?!ā Castiel was shouting, tooā¦..
āUh-oh.ā Gabriel and Sam looked at each other, worried. Shouting usually led to holes in walls and all night drinking sessions. What Dean said next, they couldnāt hear.
They could certainly hear the aftermath, though.
āGet out!ā Castiel shouted, door separating him and Dean from Sam and Gabriel flinging open. Cas looked positively LIVID.
This was NOT going to end wellā¦..
āBut Cas-ā Dean looked like heād fucked up, BIG TIME.
āI..saidā¦OUT!ā Castiel grabbed Deans arm, shoving him towards the door.
āBroā¦.Cas, stay calmā¦.donāt want to hurt him too much, now do we?ā Gabriel moved towards his brother, in much the same manner as one would approach an angry animal.
āI could throw him from the fire escape, and it would be no less than he deserves.ā Castiel growled. Sam had never seen Cas like thisā¦..
āWhat the hell did you say, Dean?ā Sam demanded, walking over to his older brother. Dean, for once, was at a loss for words. Castiel gave the elder Winchester a glare full of disgust before turning on his heel and leaving.
āI would like to know too, Deanā¦.ā Gabriel turned to the brothers, just as livid āwhat could you have possibly said that caused my baby brother to want to use his own military training on you in all the worst ways?ā
Dean looked down, unable to look at Sam or Gabriel. His cheeks were flush in embarrassment and shame as he fiddled with the ring hanging around his neck. Sam recognized the tick straight away.
āDean, you didnātā¦..damn it, go home.ā Sam sighed, gently pushing his brother to the door.
āSammyā¦ā Dean was surprised when Sam threw him his coat.
āYou need to clear your head, and Iām pretty sure Cas doesnāt even want to think about you being here, so Iāll explain.ā Sam assured him āthough, if you want my opinion, the way you went about this way nine kinds of stupid.ā Dean didnāt respond, instead taking his brothers advice and leaving.
āSo, sasquatch, care to explain?ā Gabriel motioned for Sam to sit at the kitchen table. āI think weāre going to need something stronger than cocoa for this, arenāt we?ā
āBeer or anything stronger, yeah.ā Sam sighed, sitting with his best friend at the table. He then launched into an explanation. The mental abuse, constant traveling, dealing with their dads drunkenness. How that, on top of enlisting right out of high school all manifested in Deans internalized homophobia.
āWellā¦ā¦damnā¦.ā was all Gabriel could say when Sam was finished.
āTell me about itā¦.ā Sam agreed, finishing off his beer.
āSoā¦..Iām guessing it was college that kept you from turning out like he did?ā Gabriel asked. Sam nodded.
āDeans fucked up royally with Cas, you know,ā Gabriel pointed out āhe and I both know pretty well what itās like to deal with that.ā
āYeahā¦.Iām not sure what Dean can do to salvage it all.ā Sam shrugged.
āHeās going to need to work pretty hard.ā Sam and Gabriel whipped around to notice Castiel standing in the doorway. āI heard everythingā¦.and while it may take a whileā¦ā¦Iām sure I can forgive him eventually.ā
