Because Minato had been pretending for far too long that things were alright. Because he was so tired with trying to pretend things were okay between them. Because some things were unable to be fixed, and Minato wasn’t sure that this could be fixed. 

“You’re my son, and I will always love you, Naruto. No matter what. I will always care about you.” 

Tears - when had he started crying? - trailed down his face as he looked at Naruto. And the smile he gave was pained, not quite reaching his eyes. 

“But we do nothing but hurt one another, and I can’t do it anymore. I’m sorry.”

They did nothing but hurt one another to keep the other’s attention. It wasn’t healthy, it wasn’t even right. And one day? It would destroy them both.
