I really feel as if she’s catching strong feelings for me because I’m older. I’m something different from the scummy men she’s dated in the past. But I just don’t think something serious and long-term would work out between the two of us. Maybe that’s just me, though.
Self Para: Dan meeting Alissa
It was in the wee hours of the morning that Dan found himself crawling from his bed; the sun had yet to even come above the horizon. As he shuffled groggily to the bathroom, the gravity of the situation he was in began to weigh heavily on him. ‘She’s only trying to sleep with you. She’s so young... What if she’s a mad woman? Surely, to be coming all the way to London at a time like this...’
As he brushed his teeth, his phone dinged - a message from Alissa. ‘I’ll be landing soon.’
The blue-eyed bloke stared at himself in the mirror. He had changed so much in the last decade, and his face was no exception. Signs of wear and tear on his body were beginning to show, signs that he was getting older. Wrinkles were forming, his hands growing rougher. Soon enough he’d reach middle age. And then what?
With a sigh, he returned to the bedroom and gazed over to the photo he kept on the nightstand of Rachel, his late lover. “Ten years,” he muttered to himself, shaking his head. At what point would he be able to move on? To find love once again, and this time, for good. When would these other women stop blurring into one, each one-night-stand or short term fling only digging the knife further into his chest.
‘Maybe nothing’s worked out because they’ve all been the same.’
His mind flicked through the mental book of women he kept in his head. None bore the age gap like the one between him and Alyssa.
Maybe this would be the interaction that sparked a fire inside of him. Even if it wasn’t meant to be romantic, maybe it would provide a little spice, which he definitely needed in his life. From this day, until the unknown time when she would be leaving London, he was going to keep his expectations low. She would be his little sexual experiment. If something blossomed, then, well... so be it.
After slipping the photograph into the bottom drawer, the lad dressed himself, and headed off to the airport.
It's not life or death, the labyrinth. Suffering. Doing wrong and having wrong things happen to you. That's the problem. Bolivar was talking about the pain, not about the living or dying. How do you get out of the labyrinth of suffering?
