Courtney Barnett - I need a little time
Alisnotthere: Entry #2
When you live far from your place of work, or study, you get used to the idea of time running fast. Time becomes your first thought, and everyday is a marathon. One lesson you learn pretty quick, is the fact that “anything can happen”. You may have planned perfectly your morning before going out, you took a shower, ate something and had already see what to wear for the day. But then on your way off, you find: traffic jams, delayed trains and people making the best they can to make it impossible, for you to get at your destination on time.
Living far from many places is always a challenge, another lesson you learn after more than a few rides on the subway, is how much boring it can be. You can expend between 45 or even 90 minutes inside a train, mostly packed of people, feeling an unwanted collective hug, that devoids you from personal space; Not even when I’m feeling cold I find this comforting.
The subway is my ride to everywhere, despite the years of taking the subway to get to places; I’ve never fell in love completely for the ride. I figure is the way the whole subway system looks, and one thing it represents their lack of appeal is its main ingredient: cement.
It’s a massive construction, with a giant void inside of it and a bit of an unfriendly atmosphere, that shouts to people to leave as soon as possible. Maybe, subways are less romantic from a modern perspective, perhaps it’s the fuctionality and the lack of aesthetics that makes people not to take a good picture. It is boring and simple.
Sometimes I wonder is this the reflection of our journey in the modern world, we are forced by our non stop lifestyle to depend on what the clock says, and from that point on we build our days; running to the next place, just like a runner.
We try to get all things done, trying at our best to save time, but ultimately, I think, we only care about making things to work. We don’t take a good look of them, just to realize even for a moment if those things really matter, and if those things make you, just for a moment, to forget about time.
Alisnotthere: Entry #1
After a couple of times waking up in the middle of the night, sweating and feeling terribly anxious, I started to think about the dreams I had. I dreamt about people I’ve never met before, and both cases these people shared an intimate story with me. Those stories were about bonds, special bonds, that made sense in the context of the dreams. These people I’ve never met before, from all of the sudden, meant a great deal to me. They were part of my life in it; then I also understood I was part of theirs.
Whenever I thought of them, I found myself full of emotions: joyful, passionate, foolish and devotee. I wore a smile on my face, each time I saw them by my side. But then I woke up, feeling lost; lost in the aftermath of blurry eyes and having a shaky picture of what just happened, trying to hold a photograph of the unknown faces.
These dreams, what do they really meant to be? Who are these people? Why do I feel lost and confused? The many thoughts of it, kept me busy in the morning, until I had no time to keep them in my head and went out to school.
