This is an entry that is 2 years over due. I’ve contemplated how I was going to write this over and over and over, but never seemed to come up with something that is quite right ... Now I have just decided to dive in and do what I can. So I figure I would try to say something that one of the many other reviewer have not said which is to talk a little about my personal connection to Alinea.
When I started looking into fine dining many many years ago, Alinea was the restaurant that caught my eye.  The head chef at Alinea, Grant Achatz, is the foremost in molecular gastronomy, the idea of combining science with more artistic cooking.  His story is incredible, but it has already been thoroughly documented through his book, Life, on the Line: A Chef's Story of Chasing Greatness, Facing Death, and Redefining the Way We Eat, and Chef’s Table Season 2, Episode 1, on Netflix.
Anyhow, after I read up about Chef Achatz and Alinea, it inspired me to cook on my own (for what an amateur can do). Â Finally, the year I was leaving to California, and for my 30th Birthday (which was a couple of years ago), my sister treated me to Alinea. Â She thought it would be a nice farewell to Chicago.
I will say this about the restaurant:  Alinea is the most unique and the best dining experience that I have ever had.  If you aren’t looking to be challenged, or you don’t see food in an artistic way, or you are looking to just gorge yourself until you pass out, then this restaurant is not for you.  If you are looking for depth in your food, then Alinea is by far worth the $300+ price point per meal.
Alinea has renovated since then and they have looked to evolve their menu to keep challenging themselves. Â So many of these dishes you may (or may not) be able to taste.
Every dish has extraordinary presentation and even has little surprises that keeps the meal interesting.  I was met with every texture and taste that I can think of, and even some I didn’t know about.
This experience was truly a challenge to my taste buds and helped further and enlighten me. Â I came out feeling like I learned quite a bit more about food.
The way the unique combination of taste merges with the unique presentation delivers a perfect experience.
At the end of it all, Chef Achatz comes out and prepares dessert, which he paints out on the table itself.
This was one of the most phenomenal dining experiences I have ever had. Â I even got the opportunity to shake hands with him and get a picture! I am glad I was able to thank him for his contribution to furthering cuisine in Chicago, and all around the world.
