Dickey's Barbecue Pit
This was some craving, and it was consuming my soul.
I was craving real Texas style barbecue the other day. Really craving it, and I was not messing around about where to get it. I wanted authentic, slow smoked brisket with a good smoke ring and some great sauce. And I wanted that served up with beans and fried okra. This was some craving, and it was consuming my soul. I had no idea where to get this in California, and with gas prices these days, driving to Texas was out of the question. Then my 'aha' moment happened, and I pulled up my AlikeApp. As I mentioned before, I was not messing around here, so I searched for restaurants that were like Louie Mueller Barbecue, in Taylor, TX. This is legendary barbecue, so my expectations were high. The AlikeApp suggested that I eat at Dickey's Barbecue Pit, in Campbell, CA. Sounds good to me, I thought, but deep down I expected to be disappointed. I know I shouldn't be so cynical, but this craving was deep.
I walked into the unassuming restaurant, clumped into a shopping center off of a busy road near a Wienerschnitzel and a 7-11. Once inside, I was immediately transported to Texas. The music, the atmosphere, the friendly service, the smell (mmm...), and the menu took me there. I ordered a large plate of chopped brisket (it's fattier, and therefore tastier than sliced brisket) with sides of beans, fried okra, and a biscuit. Watching the server chop the meat made my mouth water, there was a pink smoke ring around the edges of the meat that made my knees weak. I filled up my sweet tea as the okra fried, then promptly found a seat and sat down with my precious meal. It was heavenly, every bite better than the last, and my soul rejoiced. I must have downed almost two pounds of meat before I even started in on my sides. I just could not stop my body from bringing that fork back to my mouth! The sides did their job too, just right to compliment the meal, but that brisket... oh that brisket! Needless to say, I will be back, and the AlikeApp has been permanently promoted to the front of my app cue!
