fangirl is one of my favorite books what did you think of it
I really loved it! I have a diagnosed anxiety disorder (not as bad as Cath, but it’s still there) and I’m obviously hugely into fanfic, so it was really, really lovely to read about a protagonist that I could relate to like that.Â
Reagan is an amazing character, I love her a lot. And Levi was a believable guy, for sure.
I found the pace a little slow to begin with, but over all it was an awesome read.
I can’t really articulate why, but I think my favourite scene out of the entire book was when Cath is wearing her Carry On t-shirt and she bumps into that girl in the library who reads it and they chat about the fic and how it compares to the series - just something about that interaction really resonated with me, and kind of reinforced all the good that fanfic and fandom does.
A lot of people who aren’t involved have this notion of those in fandoms being isolated, anti-social people, and I’m extremely glad that, by the end of the novel, Cath and readers who maybe aren’t involved in fandom, realised that it’s actually a healthy community and that you can easily strike a balance between it and ‘real life’. You don’t have to choose, and you don’t have to give up on your passions just because you start getting older.
