Our concept is to have a four sided sign with information spread on it. When we visited the Freyberg square we noticed that there was a lot of tourists and business people walking through the square to get to other places, but also many people eating their lunch and people watching - just as we were. We wanted to make a sign that was a little bit interactive to play into the idea of people watching (so others could watch people looking at the sign), and also something that may make the people who merely walk through stop and have a look at where they are. The sign starts off with simple categories separated by colours panels, and then as you follow the sign around the four sides you are led to more information depending what you need/are looking for. We decided to use different colours rather than a gradient of colour as it makes it easier to follow around the sign. We wanted to use plywood as it is a material that would blend nicely into the aesthetics of Freyberg square, and it also a cheap and on trend material to use. The light colours are used so that the text is easy to read from further away, and again doesn’t stick out too much against the surroundings. The signs have round edges as it has a more user friendly appeal which I think is important with information design. For this reason we also went with the Capitalised lower case font rather than all caps, as it has a friendlier more legible design. We didn’t want the sign to stick out like a sore thumb, and to look like it had always been apart of the area.
