Some stuff from the summer.
July 18, 2021
We are just back from a 4 night trip into the foothills of Alberta. I’ve never explored this place much but it’s supremely beautiful and you can still find quiet places where no one else is around, even in July. It’s definitely a place we will return to in the next couple years.
We stared out near Grande Cache, taking in the Sulphur Gates, Eaton Falls, and camping along the Smokey river. We sat on the riverbank in the evening having some wine and watching kingfishers fly up and down the shore.
We moved south for the last three nights, into a remote park on a stunning lakeshore, with few people and lots of wilderness. We saw bighorn sheep, deer, elk, ospreys, a ton of grouse, and even a mama grizzly with two yearling cubs. The latter we encountered while hiking in an alpine meadow and they were a little to close for comfort, thankfully from both parties point of view, and we mutually went our separate ways. The wildflowers were also out in full July force and the hills and meadows popped with all the colours of the rainbow.
Next time we will take kayaks with us, as there are tons of stunning lakes and rivers in the area. I even found a river I would love to snorkel in and will bring snorkel gear as well next time. I’m already excited to return.
