Students need to see the connection between communities and water to develop ethical attitudes towards using and maintaining our clean water supply. Our population is continually growing and along with it is the demand for clean, drinkable water. Each child should know how their actions and decisions affect our world now and in the future so they can begin to develop as ethical citizens. As the Inspiring Education document from the Government of Alberta (2010) proposes, we want the future generation to be made up of ethical citizens who build, “relationships based on humility, fairness and open-mindedness; who demonstrates respect, empathy and compassion; and who through teamwork, collaboration and communication contributes fully to the community and the world” (p. 6). When we start the children thinking about becoming innovators of change and using creativity to find answers to problems we are fostering an entrepreneurial spirit. The Inspiring Education report (Government of Alberta, 2010) encourages students to “have the confidence to take risks and make bold decisions in the face of adversity, recognizing that to hold back is to be held back … have the courage to dream” (p. 20). As engaged thinkers, students can see the results of a joint effort through collaboration within the classroom and with experts in the field. The interdisciplinary design of our unit will enable students to consider problems from multiple perspectives and learn to be adaptable and accepting of new ideas.
