From a trip to Alaska many years ago…- view of the Turnagain Arm of Cook Inlet, near Anchorage. I did this one in gouache and colored pencil, and at the very end I decided it needed just a little crazy color, so I snuck some orange and hot pink into the trees and some bits of super-saturated blue here and there. Why not? Quaint little shop in Chicken Alaska by JLS Photography - Alaska In the late 1800's, early miners traveled far in search of gold. Food was sometimes scarce, but a particular area near the South Fork of the 40-Mile River was abundant in Ptarmigan, (now the state bird which bears a resemblance to a chicken.) The miners kept themselves alive with the help of the Ptarmigan. In 1902, Chicken was to become incorporated, (the second town in Alaska to do so.) The name "Ptarmigan" was suggested. The only problem was - was that nobody could agree on the correct spelling. Since they didn't want their town name to be a source of ridicule and laughter, they decided on "Chicken." (Which it remains to this very day - 125 years later.) This Mercantile is located in the original town of Chicken. Meanwhile a few new businesses have sprouted up in what is known as the new section of Chicken. There are wonderful gift shops, and yes, you can get some fantastic chicken for lunch or dinner. If you have ever read the book “Tisha” – you can take a tour of her old school house, located right across the road from the aforementioned businesses. Thirsty? Bikers always find their way to old Chicken, and a pub that just has to be seen – even if you don’t imbibe. Get you cameras ready for your visit to gold country.
