Alaska State Writer Laureate Saankaláxt’ Ernestine Hayes discusses portions of her writing that examine our society’s histories and heroes from a deeper perspective. 

Juneau – The Alaska Division of Libraries, Archives, and Museums is gearing up for an exhibit related to the 150 year anniversary of Alaska’s transfer from Russia to the United States. The exhibit will feature significant maps, photographs, documents, and objects related to the 1867 transfer, most of which will be exhibited for the first time. The exhibit will be held in the Andrew P. Kashevaroff Building in Juneau this fall.

Sesquicentennial Speakers Series: The Six Saints of Sitka, by Dr. Michael Oleksa (Sitka Historical Society). Dr. Oleksa tells the story of 6 amazing men in the Russian Orthodox church, who played a major role in the history of Sitka. But it's really a story of the multicultural history of civilizations from ancient Greece to Czarist Russia ... and their conflicts with Western empires from Rome to America. Together, they provide a window into the rich history and strength of spirit of the indigenous peoples of Siberia and Alaska.
