𝐓𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐥 (𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟎) | Fiction ⁣ ⁣ 

★ ★ ★: <multi-generational, Asian-American, love, family, independence>⁣ ⁣

 Tigertail is available on Netflix and is a short film (approx 1.5hrs running time). It depicts the main character's search for an improved economic situation in America at the expense of childhood dreams and loved ones.⁣ ⁣ 

I appreciated the cinematography in some scenes and but I feel like many ideas were not fully explored throughout the film - e.g. family conflict, the character's rationale/thought process, final reflections whilst in America? I would still recommend watching, but it does feel a bit unresolved/superficial in some parts of the film! If you've watched it, what were your thoughts? ⁣ ⁣ 

“I used to think you could learn to care about anyone other than yourself. But you can’t. And you never will. If I could travel back in time, I would go back to the moment I met you and run far away. So far that I would never see you again.”

Well, due to extreme boredom and as a way of keeping my anxiety at bay, I’ve decided to dust off the ol’ tumblr login and see if I can write something semi-interesting about my current film/TV watching. It looks like it’s been about four or five years since I’ve written anything on here, so let’s see how we go!

For my first foray back into the world of film-blogging, I’m taking a non-traditional tack and doing a TV show instead... Probs helps that the show in question is pretty cinematic.

Forever is one of the very few non-C-grade offerings that Amazon Prime has on the go, which I downloaded today in my isolation. Starring Maya Rudolph and Fred Armisen it promises to be interesting to say the least, as both are pretty stellar actors. Don’t be expecting a comedy though, based on their previous work. 

The show is about June and Oscar, a comfortable, albeit boring, couple who have been together for years. It’s kind of hard to explain the plot beyond that, but the title of the show provides some clues as to its direction and to its central relationship.

Everything in Oscar and June’s world is slightly muted, with the show exploring the subtle differences between contentment and complacency, a fine line in any relationship. Maya Rudolph really hits the ball out of the park as June, who seems to be more self-aware in terms of their circumstances, but without being any more engaged, necessarily. 

The show is a slow burn, but the subject matter is captivating, and Armisen and Rudolph keep pulling you deeper into their world and their relationship. The set design is immaculate and interesting, further reflecting the nature of June and Oscar’s marriage, and the cinematography lulls you into the calm, comfortable state that you’re seeing depicted.
